A Rich Iistory and a Bright Futm ■ R I CH in tradition and history, Bryan - College Station truly is "Smack in the Heart of Texas." The twin cities are nestled in the lush Brazos Valley, conve- niently located at the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and Austin/San Antonio triangle and easily accessible from all parts of the state. Residents boast of big city conveniences with small town warmth and hospitality. ■ BRYAN was established in 1859 in honor of William Joel Bryan, nephew of Texas pioneer, Stephen F. Austin. Incorporated in 1871, Bryan prospered with its robust agricultural resources and a railway system completed in 1876. That same year, the State of Texas established the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas just Messina Hof Wine Cellars of Bryan has led the Texas wine industry's recent boom. Photo by Messina Hof south of Bryan, at a site which would become College Station. Bryan's sister city was planned as a model community by college professors when the college could no longer accommodate their needs. College Station, named as a railway stop by the Postal Service in 1877, burgeoned in the 1960s, when the college opened its doors to women and became Texas A&M University. N THE cities' contrasting styles and variety of attractions have created a harmonious neighborly balance for visitors. Bryan has an impressive collection of beautiful homes and business sites with historical and architec- tural significance in its East Side historical district and its revitalized downtown area, along- side fine restaurants and community theaters. College Station, on the other hand, is an energetic and progressive city with 895 acres of parks and a statewide reputation for quality athletic events. It has grown up alongside Texas ABM University, a major education and research institution. ■ TODAY the twin cities form a delightful community to visit and a business and tourism destination with a unique blend of cultural opportunities and warm hospitality. As you wander across the campus, whether you're sightseeing or attending a meeting, the familiar Aggie greeting of "Howdy!" rings out constantly. Aggies are a friendly breed and proud of their beloved Aggieland. Texas A&M was founded in 1876 as an agricultural and mechanical college. As the Corps of Cadets grew, so did the school, becoming the co-educational Texas A&M University so highly respected today. Texas A&M has a total enrollment of over 40,000 The Academic Building. Photo by Photographic Services. students, the third largest in the nation, and the student body is becoming more diversified each year. Women form approximately 40 percent of the enrollment today, and all 50 states plus more than 115 foreign countries are represented. Though the size of the university is impressive, Texas A&M is committed to a tradition of excellence in teaching, research and public service. The university has ten colleges offering 151 fields of undergraduate study, 148 master's fields, and 105 doctoral fields and two professional degrees. The 2,500 faculty members include Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, National Medal winners and National Academy members. Additionally, its commit- ment to public service is realized both in its domestic community and in the international realm with a comprehen- sive Study Abroad program. School traditions, including the Fightin' Texas Aggie Football Team, are held dear by Aggies, and you will see much evidence of that as you visit the campus. Take an afternoon to stroll the campus; you can stop by the Campus Information Center for maps, brochures and tour information, or just ask any Aggie passing by - helping visitors is not just good old Southern hospitality, it's also an Aggie tradition. VISITOR INFORMATION Information The Visitor Information Center is located in Rudder Tower in the First Floor Lobby. They have maps available and can direct you on specific tours. Parking The easiest way to park on campus is in the parking garages open to visitors. Rates are .50 per hour.
