Workshop City Council Meeting
August 8, 1979
4:00 P.M.

Councilmen Ringer, Boughton, Dozier, Jones, Halter, Adams,
Mayor Bravenec, Tax Assessor-Collector Schroeder, City Manager
Bardell, Assistant to the City Manager Albrecht

Agenda Item No.1--Discussion of request from Texas World Speedway concerning
the use of the Hotel Motel Tax.
Harry Wharton, General Manager of Texas World Speedway asked for money to
use for ads and turned the floor over to Mike Connor, Vice President of
the Texas World Speedway and its advertising director. Connors said that an
average of $60,000 is used to promote the speedway and College Station for
each major event. He requested $100,000 a year to help support the advertising
expenditures.
Agenda Item No.2--Pro8ress report from t~e Community Center Study Committee.
Tony Jones, Chairman of the Committee, gave a report on the committee findings
and recommended continuation of a search for land and for a building to house
the community center.
Councilman Halter suggested that the committee meet with a committee from
the school board and discuss further the location and possible sharing of
facilitius.
Joe Ferreri said that the original purpose of the tax was for promoting tourism.
A1 Pedulla, chairman of the original study committee stated that the first
study report had not been used.
Andy Anderson supported the Community Center and hoped that the Council would
act on it as soon as possible.
Various other members of the audience spoke in favor of the Community Center.
Agenda Item No.3--Consideration of request of Arts .Council~ Chamber of Co~erce~
and Information Center for funding out of the Hotel-Motel Tax.
Councilman Halter said the City had committed to support the Information Center
this year for $22,000.
Councilman Halter asked Tina Watkins of the Arts Council what programs were
proposed for College Station specificially.

Agenda Item No.4--Consideration of a reply to HUD request for comments on
Housing Assistance Proposals.
Council listened to explanations of the proposed comments from Community
Development Planner Callaway.
Callaway was directed to draft a letter to HUD for the Mayor's signature.
Agenda Item No.5--Closed session to discuss personnel.
The Council moved to closed session, and later reopened to the public.
Agenda Item No.6--Adjourn.
The Mayor declared the meeting adjourned.
