Mayor Bravenec; Councilmen Hazen, Stephenson, Halter, Dozier, Gardner, Ringer; City Engineer Ash; City Planner Mayo; Building Official Koehler None See guest register Agenda Item No. 1 -- Workshop session for ~oal setting. Mayor Bravenec called the meeting to order. Councilman Halter explained the process of goal setting, stating that in order to make the goal realistic, it must tie into the budget. Councilman Halter noted the problem of community appearance in College Station. The Council set a goal to improve community appearance. Possible programs suggested to improve community appearance include: a) tree program (planting and preservation) b) trash cleanup 1) open dumping 2) revision of ordinances 3) commercial/apartment refuse containers c) removal of unoccupied/condemned buildings d) sign ordinance revision e) appearance of city properties 1) water tower area 2) Church Street f) tree shredder Councilman Hazen brought up the safety problem in the city. The Council set a goal to improve safety conditions throughout College Station. Possible programs suggested to improve safety conditions: a) b) lowering of the railroad tracks improve street lighting 1) University Street (from College to Wellborn) 2) around all schools 3) near Southwood Street and Highway 2818 4) bike path on Jersey Street Mayor Bravenec brought up the subject of development in College Station. Councilman Stephenson said he felt that the economic base of the City needed to be broadened. The Council set a goal to broaden the economic base of the City. Councilman Stephenson suggested the consideration of promoting a research park as a possible program to improve the economic base of College Station. MINUTES, Special City Council Meeting June 2, 1977 Page 2 Councilman Ringer suggested the building codes need revision in the area of energy efficiency. Councilman Halter explained the suggestions of the Building Code Energy Efficiency Committee. Councilman Hazen said she felt the building code was lacking in respect to safety in buildings of over two (2) stories in height. Building Official Koehler explained the present code in contrast to past codes. Mayor Bravenec asked about programs for regular checks of smoke detectors. Councilman Ringer suggested again that the Council look at the building code for revisions. Agenda Item No. 2 -- Adjourn.
