William R. Nash of the Keep America Beautiful organization. Mr. Nash
directs the Keep America Beautiful Field Service staff from the field
office in Grand Prairie, Texas. He is also the National Project
Director for Keep America Beautiful's Clean Community System.
Mr. William R. Nash thanked the council for allowing him to make a
presentation to the council on his project. Mr. Nash showed slides
and a filmstrip and then discussed the Keep America Beautiful
organization and their nationwide program.
He asked the council to consider participating in the KAB program and
becoming part of the Clean Community System. He also noted that Bryan
and College Station may want to organize a joint project throughout
both cities.
Mrs. Dorothy Miller, of the Beautify Brazos County Association, stated
that many citizens in the Bryan/College Station community commute from
either city to the other, to their jobs and homes. She stated that
this interaction is why they believe this effort should be a total
community involvement throughout Brazos County.
Mayor Halter suggested that the Beautify Brazos County Association
meet with the College Station Community Appearance committee to
discuss this project and to seek volunteers.
Councilman Nemec asked if the City of College Station has a time limit
in which to join the Clean Community System.
Mr. Nash replied that the City of Bryan is planning to participate in
the program and is waiting to see if the City of College Station is
willing to become a joint CCS organization. He stated that the
certification fee to join the organization is based on the total
population of the community, and the cities of Bryan and College
Station could split the cost.
Councilman Ringer stated that he felt the Clean Community System is a
worthwhile program and suggested that the City of College Station join
with Bryan in their efforts and also encourage the University to
participate.
Councilman Jones proposed that the Community Appearance committee meet
at the earliest opportunity to make recommendations and report back to
the City Council. All council members agreed to this suggestion.
Agenda Item No. 4 - Closed session to discuss personnel [6252-17(g)].
Mayor Halter announced that the city council would not hold closed
