WHEREAS, the facility would house 250 non-violent inmates ~i~ and would employ 100-150 people, approximately thirty ~ percent of those being minorities; and · ,, '"' ~" WH ' · "'"'"" ~ EREAS, the City of Bryan, as well as the community at large, is in need of economic development; and WHEREAS, it has been documented that property values have risen and neighborhoods have been upgraded in many communitie.~ where such facilities have been established; and WHEREAS, it has been shown that in many cases criminal activity has actually declined in areas when such institu- tions exist; and WHEREAS, the officials of Allen Academy have announced their intention of using the proceeds of the sale of land to build another private school facility within the City of Bryan and upgrading their institution causing more employment; and WHEREAS, there would be a significant economic impact both in terms of employment and travel of visitors and government officials; and WHEREAS, groups such as Bryan Forward! and many community leaders in Bryan have gone on record as supporting this project; and THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the College Station City Council endorse the federal minimum security camp being considered at the Allen Academy site.
