The City Council met in regular session May 1.8, 1953, with the following
present: Mayor Langford; Councilmen Black, Boyett, Orr, Pugh, Seeger., and
Sorrels;,City Attorney Barger; City Engineer Benson; City Manager Boswell and
City Secretary McGinnis.
The following visitors were present: D. A. Anderson, C. A. Greer, and
R. E. Patterson.
Councilman Orr made a motion, seconded by Councilman Seeger, that Ordinance
No. 181, an ordinance granting a renewal of franchise to the Lone Star Gas
Company, be passed as read for the second time.
The vote of the Council was unanimous in favor of the motion.
Councilman Boyett made a motion, seconded by Councilman Seeger, that
Councilman Orr be made Mayor Pro -tem.
The vote of the Council was unanimous in favor of the motion.
The Council set June 15, 1953, as the date for a public hearing on the pro-
posed changes in zoning as recommended by the City Zoning Commission, the hearing
to be held in the City Hall at 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the June Council
meeting.
The Council instructed City Manager Boswell to investigate the possibilities
of group life insurance and hospitalization for the city enployees and report
his findings to the June meeting.
Councilman Orr made a motion, seconded by Councilman Black, that the City
place in the budget $3,000 for the Bryari and Brazos County Health Unit for the
fiscal year beginning July 1, 1953®
The vote of the Council was unanimous in favor of the motion.
Mayor Langford reported that Messrs. Utzman and Brennan, district and
local managers for the Southwestern States Telephone Company, would be ready
to report on their request for an increase in telephone rates to a joint
meeting of the Bryan.City Commission and the College Station City Council with-
in about three weeks.
Mayor Langford read a letter from Superintendent L. S. Richardson of the
A & M Consolidated School calling attention to the open toilets in the area
south of the high school campus and requesting that sewerage connections be
made available. No official action was taken on the request as this area is
included in the study now being made by City Engineer Benson.
The Council authorized City Manager Boswell to get proposals on the
auditing of the City's books for the fiscal year ending with June 30, 1953.
Messrs. D. A. Anderson, C. A. Greer and R. E. Patterson led a discussion
on the encroachment of business in a restricted residential area in College Hills.
Mayor Langford was authorized by the Council to write a letter to the offending
people calling their attention to the fact that they may be vi61ating a City,
ordinance.
Councilman Orr made a motion, seconded by Councilman Boyett, that the
Mayor be instructed to prepare a "Statement of City Council Concerning its
Official Relation With the A & M Consolidated School," and that a copy of
the statement be sent by first-class mail to every resident of the city.
The vote of the Council was unanimous in favor of the motion.
City Engineer Benson discussed the drainage problems caused by driveway
entrances from city streets and was requested to prepare a statement of
policy relative thereto for Council consideration.
