HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/26/1957 - Regular Minutes - City CouncilOF CA MINUTES OF CALIED MEETING August 26, 1957 Members present: Mayor Langford; Councilmen Boyett, McCall, Orr, Sorrels; City Attorney Dillon; City Manager Boswell. Visitors present: J. B. Nemec, A. D. Folweiler, R. E. Patterson. The request of Councilman Anderson that he be excused from this meeting was unanimously granted by the council. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Boyett, the Mayor was authorized to renew a note in the amount of $4,500 with the College Station State Bank. By unanimous approval of the council, a resolution on the death of the late Mayor B. F. Vance of Bryan was approved with copies to be sent to Mrs. Vance and the City Commission of Bryan and a copy to be spread on the minutes of this meeting. RESOLUTION The City Council of College Station records with deepest sympathy the death on July 5 of Mayor B. F. Vance of Bryan. Although his term of office as Mayor was less than three months, this Council had come to respect his wisdom and capacity for leadership, and looked forward with anticipation to an administration devoted to the common interests of the people whom the governing bodies of the two cities serve. Mr. Vance was a man of rugged common sense re- spected by all who knew him. His friends were legion; his influence for good reached to the far corners of the nation. The City of Bryan, this community, and the State of Texas have suffered an irreparable loss in his death. As a further token of respect, it is ordered that copies of this resolution when signed by the Mayor and the City Secretary be sent to Mrs. Vance and the City Commission of Bryan, and a copy spread on the minutes of this meeting. w Minutes of City Council Continued: 2 L August 26, 1957 r The City Manager was authorized to establish any necessary speed limits along Highway 6 during construction. n. ca m The question of zoning of pasture and farm lands which have been A recently incorporated into the city limits was referred to the Zoning Commission. Q A On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Sorrels, the Z City Attorney was instructed to work with the Mayor and City Manager on F- a program of indexing city ordinances with the idea of their possible (n codification. The Mayor reminded the Council of the meeting of the League of Texas Municipalities in San Antonio September 29 - October 1. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman McCall, the City Manager was instructed to have a study of the water distribution system matter at the earliest possible moment. On motion by Councilman Sorrels, seconded by Councilman Orr, Municipal Maintenance Agreement, Form 1038, was approved and the Mayor and City Secretary authorized to sign the same for the city. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Sorrels, Ordinance No. 255, an ordinance proposing to rezone Lots 34, 35, 36, Block 3, South Oakwood Addition, was approved and the question referred to the Zoning Commission for study and recommendation. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman McCall, Councilman Sorrels and City Manager Boswell were authorized to work out a suitable agreement relative to certain sewage disposal problems w in Woodland Estates and to enter into written agreement with individuals concerned as to maintenance of operation. On motion by Councilman Sorrels, seconded by Councilman Orr, the request of the A. & M. Methodist Church for the closing of a certain v alley and street in the vicinity of the church property was denied and CL ou the Mayor instructed to write officials of the church accordingly. m A On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Boyett, the City Manager was instructed to advise Mr. W. E. Stone that the city '¢ will pay him the difference between his salary and any compensation which he may receive from the Standard Workmen's Compensation and Q Employers' Liability Policy for the months of September and October, 1957, at which time payments by the city will be terminated. t!1 400514 f?(0 Minutes of City Council Continued: 3 August 26, 1957 On motion by Councilman Sorrels, seconded by Councilman Orr, the City Manager was authorized to invest $11,000 of Revenue Bond Sinking Fund money in U. S. Government bonds. The City Manager was instructed to take every possible step towards enforcement of the ordinance relative to dogs running at large w w in the city limits. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Sorrels, the City Manager was authorized to have plans and specifications prepared for the improvement of Jersey Street from East Dexter to the A & M Consolidated School and if possible to have an estimate of cost ready Q- for the next meeting. C m On motion by Councilman Sorrels, seconded by Councilman McCall, the City Manager was instructed to advise the parties concerned that the shopping center sign near the circle on F.
