Visitors Present: Lee A. Griggs, R. R. Rhodes, Mrs. R. R. Rhodes, John S. Denison, Richard M. Adams, J. D. Chaney, Paul M. Mason, Ralph H. Davey, Ray T. Lee, H. A. Turney, R. D. Longshore, C. H. Bernard, Jesse L. Buffington, J. T. Lawhon, Bardin H. Nelson, Walter S. Manning, James L. Wallace, E. C. Bashaw, Gene Guinn, Thomas W. Bishop, Tom C. Prater, John R. Houston, Doc P. Huddleston, Johnny P. Lunardon, Gerald Buchert, J. F. Jackson, R. T. Lee, W. J. Word, L. E. Langston, Billy Rogers, J. A. Raus, Edward D. Hill, W. J. Hatchell, Spiro S. Mijalis, J. E. Stewart, E. E. Deland Jr., and Jack W. Hussey. The request from Councilman Anderson that he be excused from the meeting was approved by the council. On motion by Councilman Landiss, seconded by Councilman Orr, the request of Dr. S. R. Wright that he be relieved of his duties as chairman of the city planning and zoning commission was accepted. The mayor was instructed to write Dr. Wright expressing to him the council's appreciation of his services to the city. On motion by Councilman Sorrels, seconded by Councilman Orr, Mr. Charles Pinnell was appointed to succeed Dr. Wright as chairman of the planning and zoning commission. On motion by Councilman Sorrels, seconded by Councilman Orr, the city manager was authorized to attend the International City Manager Association Meeting in St. Louis, on October 25 - 28, and to be reimbersed for the expenses incurred therewith. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Landiss, the mayor and city manager were authorized to renew a note of $10,500.00 at the College Station State Bank. A public hearing was held on the proposed street construction on Walton Drive and Kyle Avenue and a portion of Lee Street. Mr. Ralph H. Davey brought up the question of the inconvenience to residents during construction. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Landiss, the public hearing was closed. On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Sorrels, Ordinance No. 286, an ordinance closing public hearing and leveying assessments, ect., against property owners abutting Kyle Avenue and Walton Drive and the south end of Lee Street, was passed and approved. City Attorney Dillon read a proposed ordinance concerning the sale and dis- tribution of obscene literature. When the mayor asked for discussion, Mr. Tom Prater presented a petition requesting council action on the question. MINUTES OF CITY COUNCIL CONTINUED: Page 2 SEPTEMBER 289 1959 On motion by Councilman Orr, seconded by Councilman Sorrels, the mayor was authorized to arrange a meeting with the city commission of Bryan to discuss joint action by the two bodies. The mayor read the changes suggested by B -W Construction Company to reduce the cost for additions to the city offices. On motion by Councilman Orr, secon- ded by Councilman Landiss, the mayor and city manager were authorized to sigh a contract in the amount of $7,900.00 with the company, and if necessary to borrow sufficient funds for this construction. w n The mayor was requested to confer with college authorities about the ,f possible construction of a through road south of the campus to join Highway 6 ,Q and F M. 2164. The mayor was also asked to discuss with highway officials the question of reflectors in the islands along Highway 6. V W The council adjourned subject to call.
