HomeMy WebLinkAbout1-14-99-6.5 - Resolution - 01/14/1999CITY OF COLLEGE STATION RESOLUTION RESOLUTION NUMBER 1-14-99-6.5 RESOLUTION URGING THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO ENACT LEGISLATION THAT AUTHORIZES ENTITIES THAT ASSESS AND COLLECT AD VALOREM TAXES TO ENABLE THEM TO SELL DELINQUENT TAXES TO PRIVATE CONCERNS WHO WOULD THEN TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO COLLECT THE TAXES OWED WHEREAS, the City of College Station, Texas assesses and collects ad valorem taxes to provide for the service and capital needs of its citizens; and WHEREAS, the City of College Station, Texas has limited options that it may use to collect delinquent taxes; and WHEREAS, other states have provided an additional mechanism in the for of sales of tax liens to private businesses in order to allow the taxing entities to receive revenues owed; and WHEREAS, such sales provide for immediate funds to a taxing entity; and WHEREAS, experience has demonstrated that such private collections may assist to increase current collections of ad valorem taxes; and WHEREAS, sales of tax liens eliminates the costs of delinquent collections to the assessing and collecting entity. NOW, THEREFOR, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of College Station: THAT the 76th Legislature be and is hereby urged to enact legislation authorizing local ad valorem taxing entities to sell any or all of its delinquent taxes. THAT a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the representatives in the Texas House of Representatives and to the state senator who represent the citizens of the City of College Station.
