HomeMy WebLinkAbout4-25-2002-12.07 - Resolution - 04/25/2002 c RESOLUTION NO. 4-25-2002-12.07 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, COMPLEMENTING GOVERNOR RICK PERRY FOR HIS TRANSPORTATION AGENDA AND THE CONCEPT FOR THE TRANS TEXAS CORRIDOR AND ENCOURAGING THE CREATION OF A HIGHSPEED PASSENGER RAIL CORRIDOR FOR THE BRAZOS VALLEY REGION. WHEREAS, the Brazos Valley Region is one of the fastest growing areas in the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, over 267,000 people have decided to make this area their home due to excellent quality of life made possible by the low cost of living, the ever increasing employment opportunities, the cultural and recreation activities; and WHEREAS, the proximity of the Harris County and Houston areas and the continued growth and movement toward the Brazos Valley Region will continue to influence the growth and economy in the future; and WHEREAS, the Brazos Valley is only 92 miles from the Houston metropolitan area, 90 miles from Waco, 104 miles from Austin, 166 miles from San Antonio, and 180 miles from Dallas and Fort Worth; and WHEREAS, with over 44,000 students, Texas A &M University is the 4th largest in the nation with over 12,000 employees and offers extensive intellectual and cultural advantages to the region; and WHEREAS, Texas A &M University, as one of the largest engineering schools in the nation, attracts students from throughout the State of Texas, the entire United States as well as from abroad; and WHEREAS, the Brazos Valley region is in the heart of the most populated area of the State of Texas that includes the cities of Austin, Dallas -Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio; and WHEREAS, this central location is ideal for a new high -speed rail corridor to serve the Brazos Valley in support of the Governor's Trans Texas Corridor plan. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS: PART 1: THAT College Station should be connected by a high speed passenger rail corridor with fast, efficient, and economical high speed rail service to the major metropolitan areas in the State of Texas. PART 2: THAT the City of College Station supports the Governor's Trans Texas Corridor Plan concept and encourages the Governor and the Texas Department of Transportation to continue to look at transportation from a multi -modal viewpoint. U:IResolutions 2002IRESOLUTIONNO. 4 -25- 2002- 12.07doc.doc PART 3: THAT this high -speed rail corridor to serve the Brazos Valley Region of the State of Texas should be called the "Brazos Express" Corridor; PART 4: THAT the Texas Department of Transportation make a recommendation to the Texas Transportation Commission to approve the creation of the Brazos Express Corridor as part of the Trans Texas Corridor Plan. PART 5: THAT this resolution shall be circulated to interested parties including the Texas Congressional Delegation, the Governor of Texas, members of the Texas Legislature, the Texas Transportation Commission, the Texas Department of Transportation, Cities, Counties, Chambers of Commerce within the Brazos Valley Region, the media and others, and is so accordingly ordered.
