HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-08-2001-10.7 - Resolution - 03/08/2001RESOLUTION NO.: 03-08-01-10.7 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION URGING THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO NOT EXTEND THE SALES TAX HOLIDAY OR TO ONLY INCLUDE THE STATES PORTION OF ANY EXPANSION OF THE SALES TAX HOLIDAY AND/OR ANY ADDITION OF ITEMS INCLUDED IN A SALES TAX HOLIDAY THAT THE LEGISLATURE MAY APPROVE. WHEREAS, the State of Texas during its 1999 session of the legislature passed and the governor signed into law a bill that would exempt certain items from taxation on two specific days each year; and WHEREAS, the State Legislature of the State of Texas is considering a number of bills that would exempt the same and possibly additional items from taxation and extending the number of days each year that items would be exempt; and WHEREAS, the City of College Station, Texas assesses and collects sales taxes to provide for the service and capital needs of its citizens; and WHEREAS, the City of College Station, Texas depends on sales taxes for approximately 45% of its General Fund revenues to continue to provide a high level of service to its citizens; now therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS: PART 1: That the City Council hereby approves a resolution urging the 77th Legislature to make changes in the sales taxes that only affect the revenues of the State of Texas and do no impact local govenments that have elected to impose some or all sales taxes authorized under state law. PART 2: That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the offices of the Governor Rick Perry, Lieutenant Governor Bill Ratliff, Speaker of the House James E. Laney, Senator Steve Ogden, Representatives Fred Brown and Lois Koikhorst. PART 3: That this resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage.
