HomeMy WebLinkAbout8-22-2005-13.08 - Resolution - 08/22/2005RESOLUTION NO. 8-22-2005-13.08 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, TO SUPPORT KEEPING IN PLACE THE "WRIGHT AMENDMENT" TO THE INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORTATION COMPETITION ACT OF 1979. WHEREAS, in 1968, the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth agreed to build a regional airport to replace Dallas Love Field and Greater Southwest International Airport as directed by the Civil Aeronautics Board; and WHEREAS, the airlines serving the Dallas -Fort Worth Metroplex pledged to move to the new regional airport; and WHEREAS, Southwest Airlines chose to keep Dallas Love Field as its headquarters; and WHEREAS, in 1979, U.S. House Leader Jim Wright of Texas drafted an Amendment known as the "Wright Amendment" to the International Air Transportation Competition Act of 1979 passed by the US Congress, which permitted air carrier service between Love Field and Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico; and said amendment was subsequently amended by the Shelby Amendment to add Kansas, Alabama and Mississippi; and WHEREAS, there exists a movement to repeal the Wright Amendment; and WHEREAS, such repeal may adversely affect air operations at Easterwood Airport through reduced Federal Airport Improvement Program funding opportunities and reduced enplanements. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS: PART 1: That the Mayor is hereby authorized to execute this Resolution of Support for keeping the Wright Amendment in place as currently drafted until the FAA terminates Air Carrier operations at Dallas Love Field as directed by the Civil Aeronautics Board in 1968. PART 2: That the City Council directs the College Station staff to make this Resolution known to the appropriate public officials. PART 3: That this Resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage. ADOPTED this 22nd day of Au s st, A. . 2005. CONNIE HOOKS, City Secretary City Attorney JOINT RESOLUTION 8-22-2005-14.01 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE SELECTION OF THE BRYAN -COLLEGE STATION COMMUNITY AS THE LOCATION OF THE FUTURE GEORGE W. BUSH PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY. WHEREAS, the citizens of Brazos County, and the cities of Bryan and College Station, as well as in the surrounding area, have a long history of demonstrating their support for President George W. Bush throughout his career in public service, and WHEREAS, that record of support and shared principles and visions was instrumental in helping Z exas A&M University successfully secure the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, which formally opened in 1997 and has subsequently attracted more than a million visitors, with well- documented results showing that the decision to locate that national treasure in the Bryan -College Station area has been mutually beneficial beneficial to the University, to the communities and their citizenry and to the legacy of the 41st President of the United States, and WHEREAS, the experience gained as a result of that mutually beneficial partnership of the communities, Texas A&M University, Former President Bush and his associates at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum places the cities and the University in an excellent position to host the future library of President George W. Bush, and WHEREAS, the highly positive synergy that would result from the co -location of the libraries of two great American Presidents would be unique in the strictest sense of the word- --with visitors having the opportunity to see, and otherwise experience, in close proximity the accomplishments of these two great Americans who have been so instrumental in shaping the nation's policies over decades and have exerted great bearing on world affairs, and WHEREAS, the citizens of Brazos County, and the cities of Bryan and College Station, as well as those in the surrounding area, also take great pride in hosting Texas A&M University, a unique American institution, and have benefited significantly from its development over a period of 129 years, and WHEREAS, officials of Brazos County, the City of Bryan, and the City of College Station have always Welcomed the opportunity to partner with Texas A&M University in opportunities that are mutually beneficial and serve a higher purpose, and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the undersigned elected officials, acting with authorization of our governing bodies, do hereby enthusiastically endorse and support the selection of the Bryan -College Station Community as the location of the future George W.
