Here's the latest news from the Associated Pre… 00:00:07 Speaker 2 …1620 WTAW. ------------------------------- 00:00:09 Tom Turbiville (TT) This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. Good times and fun times at WTAW, and former and current staffer Michele McNew recalls them all. Radio shtick, if you will, like when she and former jock Tony Cornett jumped out of a plane. 00:00:28 Michele McNew (MM) He and I, back in the day that had that, uh, parachuting school out at, uh, the Colter Airfield. They did a promotion for them in which Tony, uh, was going to do a li- live broadcast jumping for the client, like a live broadcast jumping from the air at 14,000 feet. I got to go do it too. So, I was about 23, I guess, and so they taped a recorder to me so that we could get the audio when I- when we jump, but Tony and I did tandem jumps from 14,000 feet the same day. We got a picture; I've got a great picture of us. He did the live broadcast as he was going down yelling and screaming, and, you know, the wind blowing you can't hardly talk with is so intense, but we had a lot of fun. At the Hilton, we had these big bashes, we dressed up even the girls in tuxedos and had promotions, you know, things like that. We were just always out and having fun. 00:01:21 (TT) And she recalls when George Carlin did that benefit at the Hall of Fame for the Jo e Monroe Scholarship. Well, she remembers after the show. 00:01:30 (MM) Then we all went to the Ptarmigan after and had drinks. Yes, we did, all of us. Uh, the station people did, I mean, it was, um, back in the day whenever Mr. Monroe just had passed. And we went to the Ptarmigan afterwards and had drinks with the man and he made us laugh all night long. So that's a great memory too. 00:01:48 (TT) Great history from Michele McNew of WTAW, the First 100 Years.
