This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. There is electronic media, like WTAW,
and of course there is print media like The Eagle. And the two may be news competitors of sorts,
but the two have consistently had a way of scratching each other's back, especially in the old
days when the then-Bryan Eagle would headline just about everything that WTAW would put on
the air. Example: April 22, 1926, headline, “Orchestra will play tonight and the Cats on Friday.
The Aggieland Orchestra will play from Station WTAW Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. On
Friday evening, the station will broadcast music played by the Campus Cats ”. May 13, 1926;
headline, “Everything is in readiness for opening of the Fireman's Benefit Carnival in Bryan.
Fire Chief C.E. Jenkins has been appointed Chairman of the Committee to officially notify the
Queen of her election at her residence and Reverend S.M. Byrd will announce the results over
WTAW tonight”. August 24, 1927; headline, “Wardrobe of schoolgirl radio subject. The
schoolgirl's wardrobe is one of the timely subjects of the discussion that will be featured at the
September program of Station WTAW, the A&M College of Texas broadcasting station”. Fast
forward to August 14, 1966; Judy Bryant, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney L. Bryant.
Thursday; was selected Miss WTAW to represent the local radio station in the Miss Astro contest
to be held August 28th at the Astrodome in Houston”. It was all in the newspaper about WTAW,
the First 100 Years.
