This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. Since the Hicks family bought WTAW,
we have, within our office walls, been a very close family. A family that has each other's back.
Through tough personal times; the worst of personal times. No one knows that more than WTAW
and Bryan Broadcasting owner Bill Hicks, his wife Paula, and their family.

In a business like this where you have 50 full-time employees and, uh, a number of part-time
employees, it ends up being very much like a family, an extended family. I mean, we hurt when
somebody has cancer. We hurt when somebody has heart problems. We hurt with every medical
issue that comes through here, and we've had dozens and dozens and dozens of those. And we try
as best we can to support people, even supported former employees of this radio station that
worked elsewhere when they needed support, because it's important to do the right thing.
00:01:10 (TT)
And like I said, through the absolute worst of times.
00:01:13 (BH)
My youngest son became pretty ill. He had brain cancer. It was a terrible battle for years and
years. I was not able to be directly involved in running the radio station group because I was too
busy trying to sa-- help save my son's life and be his advocate. I was in a situation where the
people here backed me up and let me go do what I needed to do. Ultimately, we weren't
successful in defeating cancer and we lost my son, but the people here were just wonderful.

John Hardin Hicks is greatly missed by the family of WTAW, the First 100 Years.
