This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. WTAW has had the good fortune to be
visited live in the studio by many a celebrity over the years, mostly on the morning show, the
show that has always started around 6 a.m. But former morning show host, now super
salesperson Mary Mike Hatcher, recalls when in 1982, in order to get one big celeb on live, they
had to start two hours early. A&M's MSC Town Hall had brought in a megastar.

They had hired Red Skelton to come in and do a night at Town Hall. So, his PR person contacted
us or we contacted them, I really can't remember how it came about, but they said, “Well, he will
do an on-air interview, but it has to be at 4:00 in the morning”. And, you know, we didn't sign on
until 6:00 in the morning. We said, “Well why 4:00? Y’know why can't he just y’kno-- “no, he is
a creative”. And you know how brilliant Red Skelton was, not only as a comedian, but he was an
artist. I believe that's when he did his painting was early in the morning. We did the interview
with him and amazing interview. Some listeners found out that what he loved to eat was red
beans and rice. So, we had about two or three listeners bring him pots of red beans and rice to the
radio station (chuckles) early that morning. I don't know if he ever ate him or not, but just to have
that type of greatness to interview somebody of that caliber.

Yep, we got up early for Red Skelton on WTAW, the First 100 Years.
