This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. Cross-promotion has been a part of radio
for a long time, so take it back to 1964. Edna Shulman had taken over the Palace Theater after
her husband Morris had passed away. And there was a new movie out starring Ingrid Bergman,
Rex Harrison, and George C. Scott; brought some of the stars to downtown Bryan. The movie?
The Yellow Rolls Royce. Who better to tell that story than former WTAW owner Bill Watkins.

She remodeled it and made it into a real plush fancy theater. To open up, she joined with WTAW
and to promote the grand opening of the new and improved and super Palace Theater. She liked
to promote and, uh, go, so, uh, she brought in one of the latest movies that was out, the ol’
Yellow Rolls Royce. We were in contests on the rides and winners riding in that thing, and you
know, that was a, ba-- back then, that was about $100,000 car. It was a real memory, and, uh, we
also ran a contest with the, uh, actresses and actresses, uh, and, uh, the people that won the
contest to get to come in and meet and interview the, uh, actors. And so, the, uh, promotion, the
upstart of the Palace Theater and the new terms was just really a big event in downtown Bryan.
