This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. July the 28th, 1980, a sellout crowd
gathered at the Texas Hall of Fame in Bryan. Not to listen to the most recent famous country
singer, but for a famous stand-up comic named George Carlin. Carlin had started in radio in
Shreveport at a station called KJOE, KJO, as in Joe Monroe, who would later become the station
manager and the morning show host at WTAW. That's right, Joe Monroe was George Carlin's
first boss. And when Joe died in Bryan, June the 29th, 1980, Carlin came to the funeral, and then
less than a month later, appeared at the Hall. A Battalion article about that concert said that it was
a blend of both the clean and the not-so-clean humor that Carlin was famous for. He offered up
jokes about the absurdity of the English language, the way Rice Krispies float in milk. Carlin
talked about all the little things like dogs, cats, shaking hands, kitchens, being sick, butter
warmers, office furniture, and refrigerators. He called that the only major appliance with a
nickname, the fridge. The proceeds to that concert went towards the Joe Monroe Scholarship in
the communications department, which Carlin established at Texas A&M. That's another thing
that maybe you did not know about WTAW, the First 100 Years.
