That is Carl T. Sprague, better known around here as Doc Sprague, because from 1922 to 1937,
he was a trainer at Texas A&M, hired by football coach DX Bible. But he moonlighted, singing
live on WTAW during the 1920s. Aggie C lass of 1922 served in both World War I and World War
II, and he was regarded as one of America's first singing cowboys. Yeah, but he put his music on
the back burner, sold insurance before picking up his guitar again in the 1960s and 70s. Doc
Sprague lived in Bryan most of his life. He led songs at the Bryan Lions Club and the First
Baptist Church. Doc Sprague died in Bryan in 1979. In 2003, a collection of his 24 songs was
released in an anthology titled, “Cowtrails, Longhorns, and Tight Saddles”.
