This is WTAW, the First 100 Years, I'm Tom Turbiville. Mary Mike Hatcher's been coming to
work at WTAW for 45 years. And when she started in sales and on air on the morning Muck and
Mires show and before the internet made it a whole lot easier, show prep was a chore.

I remember when I was doing the show with Scott DeLuci a, we had four or five newspapers that
we would read every morning to get enough show prep to talk about. Of course, we always
focused on local and current events, but you got your-- you had your little, uh, sidebars of, uh,
creativity that would come through the newspapers; and that's how we got it. We had no wire
service, no Internet. But that's your grassroots broadcaster; that's your grassroots entertainment.
[breathes] I was horrible at actually the, uh, the control board. Horrible! I didn't have that ability
in me. That was soon taken away from me. I could spin a record, but I sure couldn't push a
button [laughs]. But those days in that Mobile Avenue studio, I'll never forget. That was family ;
you knew when you saw the person walk in, what kind of day they were going to have, if they
had a good night's sleep. We drank a lot of coffee in those days, but morning shows dictate that
you… stay alert and bright and… you know, we did it without medication [laughter].
