This is WTAW The First 100 Years. I'm Tom Turbiville. When John Hicks went into the radio rep
business in the 1950s, it started the Hicks family on a radio journey that continues today. John's
youngest son, Bill Hicks, bought WTAW in 1986, became the president and the CEO, and along
with Ben Downs, oversaw the station's transition in 1990 from a country station to Newstalk.
WTAW is in Bill Hicks's blood.

I had a lifelong interest in, in WTAW because my dad was part of buying it in 60, 61. When I
was a young man, I was probably six years old, first grade. I was so close to the radio business
because that was part of our lives. Every, Every, my brothers all worked as disc jockeys, what we
call back in the day, in high school. I did too. I was a disc jockey in high school. I have pictures
of me as a 16-year-old playing records. It still cracks me up. But um, yeah radio has been a really
important part of my life because I grew up in it. And this has been the place that I've gotten to
be a part of this community now for 36 years. That's a long time. So, I've raised a family here, six
kids. They've all gone to school here and some live here. I mean, I have one son that's a high
school math teacher at Rudder High School, another who works here in the business with me.
