He was 8 years old when his family moved into the fire chief's apartment in the basement of the Municipal Building of Bryan (now home to The Children's Museum of the Brazos Valley). Charles' father, .lohn Stasny, was the fire chief and only paid fire fighter in Bryan in :[929. The other firemen served the city as volunteer firemen. Charles Stasny has told how his mother would pull the rope to ring the fire bell that was on top of the building to send out the alarm. The bell is now on the grounds of the Bryan Public Library directly across 27th Street from The Children's IVluseum. The Firegator is the title of a book that was written by local author Debbie Leland and illustrated by local artist Ann Hollis Rife to benefit The Children's Museum. It is a fanciful story based on stories told by Charles Stasny about living in the IVlunicipal Building as a child.
