HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/21/1974 - Regular Minutes City Council (2)RESOLUTION RESOLUTION ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE PRINCIPLE OF FAIR AND OPEN HOUSING IN THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION AS SET FORTH IN TITLE VIII OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1968. WHEREAS~ adequate, safe, and decent housing is a necessary ingredient to the maintenance of the standard of living in this country; and, WHEREAS, it is important that every human being have access to adequate housing of his choice? and, WHEREAS, it is beneficial to the social and economic welfare of the entire city that every person have access to adequate housing- and, WHEREAS~ the City Council recognizes the problems facing the citizens of College Station in obtaining access to adequate, safe and decent housing; and, WHEREAS, the law of the land is that no citizen can be denied access to housing of his choice because of race~ color, religion, or national origin; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF COLLEGE STATION' SECTIO~.~ 1. That the City Council endorses and supports the principle of fair and open housing; as set forth in Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, and the right of every person to have access to adequate., safe, and decent housing of his own choice without regard to race color, religion, or national origin. SECTION 2. That the City Council encourages all citizens to respect and support the law of the land in regard to the right of every person to access to adequate, safe, and decent housing of his own choice. SECTION 3. That the City Council encourages all citizens to undertake voluntary actions to foster racial harmony, including individual and group decisions to promote fair and open housing and individual committment to avoid discrimination in the sale and rental of all property. SECTION 4. That the City Council encourages all developers, realtors, and other housing groups to specifically note their endorsement and support of this principle by displaying "open housing" statements or symbols in their advertisements, signs, and business literature. 01690 Page 2, Resolution SECTION 5. That the urgency and public necessity of this Resolution required that it take effect immediately from and after its passage and it is so ordered. PASSED AND APPROVED this 21st day of March , 1974.
