BOB E. WATERS
Bob E. Waters was born and reared in Woodville, Texas, where he graduated from High School
in 1945. Following two years at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, he entered Stephen
F. Austin College in Nacogdoches and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1949. Three years later
he completed a Master's degree in Theology at Perkins School of Theology, S.M.U.
Mr. Waters devoted his years to the local church, serving pastorates in Orange, Beaumont,
Kountze, Texas City, Mt. Pleasant, and a twelve -year tenure at A &M United Methodist Church
in College Station. He then joined the Bishop's cabinet, serving his last six years as District
Superintendent of the Beaumont area prior to his retirement in 1993. He presently resides in
College Station, where he works in the local church, preaches on invitation, and involves
himself in various community interests.
During his 43 years of active service in the Texas Annual Conference, Mr. Waters served on
several Boards and Agencies, including a term as Chairman of the Board of Ordained Ministry
during the time of merger with the Gulf Coast Conference. He also served on the Board of
Hospital and Homes, Board of Pensions, Board of Diaconal Ministry, and the Conference
Council on Finance and Administration. He was elected by his peers to serve as a clergy
delegate to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences of 1984, 1988, and 1992. In 1983
Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, awarded him an honorary degree for
distinguished church leadership.
Mr. Waters also maintained a strong interest in community programs, having held membership
in several service groups such as Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Clubs. He was an advocate of
Ministerial associations in the cities where he served, and chaired such groups on occasion. He
worked with campaigns such as March of Dimes, Heart Association, Cancer Society, and others.
During his long tenure at A &M United Methodist Church in College Station, he served on the
Board of Humana Hospital, the Internal Review Committee at the School of Medicine, and was
a director of the Bryan- College Station Chamber of Commerce.
In 1947 he married Violet Vaughan of Pt. Neches, Texas, who received a Bachelor's degree from
Stephen F. Austin along with her husband. Mrs. Waters has taken a most active role in the
United Methodist Women, the Sunday School, the Conference spouse's annual retreats, the
Maroon and White Corps at Methodism's student center at A &M, and a variety of other vital
ministries. The couple have four children and five grandchildren, and they remain active today
in many church and community programs.
