Mayor Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:00 p. m. in the Council Room
of the City Hall in College Station, Texas.
Mayor Anderson explained that this informal meeting had been called as a
"Listening Session" for the purpose of hearing ideas or suggestions from local
businessmen as to particular city -business oriented problems they were having and
recommendations they might have to make to the City Council.
Mayor Anderson asked if any of the council members had any comment to make
before he opened the floor for discussion. Councilman Dozier stated that he had
received a copy of the revised Subdivision Ordinance and that he would like to hear
what the feelings of persons in the audience were concerning things that were proposed
in the Subdivision Ordinance such as underground utilities, sidewalks, etc.
Councilman Cooley stated that he felt a number of the businessmen in town
objected to the personal property tax that was levied against retail businesses for
their inventory. He stated that he felt there should be some way to try and make it
more equal and broad-based.
Mayor Anderson then opened the floor for discussion from any citizen in the
audience.
In view of the fact that considerable discussion followed among citizens and
councilmen present, only the major points or suggestions which were touched upon
are herein recorded, and are as follows:

1. It was the concensus of many of the citizens present that the school board
and the city council should work together more closely to get the school to
hold the line on taxes. There was concern about school taxes as it affects
business.
2. Many of the businessmen were in favor of an industrial park within the
city.
3. Some were in favor of lower cost housing, but land costs were a factor
towards their construction.
4. Some complaints were made against the Planning and Zoning Commission
in actions they had taken in the past. Some favored representation on the
Commission which they felt was not the case.
5. Better thoroughfare system in the city was stressed by one as a primary need.
6. Attracting more businesses, as well as people in College Station. One
present said no one encouraged him to establish a business. City lacked
someone to "push".
7. Closing of businesses on Sunday.
8. Extending water service to areas presently not served in the city (who
should bear the cost initially) ?
9. Paving of streets (non curb and gutter) was stressed as need.
10. Need to reconsider appointment of Industrial Committee.
11. Need to have some group"push" for College Station.
