Davis, Bill J. Cooley, C. H. Ransdell, Joseph J. McGraw, and James H. Dozier; City Manager Ran Boswell, and City Secretary Lynda Swoveland Visitors Present: W. D. Fitch, George Williams, J. E. Robbins, Estes Marshall, Joe R. Sawyer, Marion Pugh, Jack Fugate, Homer Adams, Edward Miller, Frank Griffis, C. R. Watson, Roland Evans, B. R. Craig, Arthur Vinzant, Dick Hervey, George Eby, E. F. " Woody" Sevison, Don Dale and Bob Evans Mayor Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:00 p. m. in the Council Room of the City Hall in College Station, Texas. Mayor Anderson explained that this informal meeting had been called as a "Listening Session" for the purpose of hearing ideas or suggestions from local businessmen as to particular city -business oriented problems they were having and recommendations they might have to make to the City Council. Mayor Anderson asked if any of the council members had any comment to make before he opened the floor for discussion. Councilman Dozier stated that he had received a copy of the revised Subdivision Ordinance and that he would like to hear what the feelings of persons in the audience were concerning things that were proposed in the Subdivision Ordinance such as underground utilities, sidewalks, etc. Councilman Cooley stated that he felt a number of the businessmen in town objected to the personal property tax that was levied against retail businesses for their inventory. He stated that he felt there should be some way to try and make it more equal and broad-based. Mayor Anderson then opened the floor for discussion from any citizen in the audience. In view of the fact that considerable discussion followed among citizens and councilmen present, only the major points or suggestions which were touched upon are herein recorded, and are as follows: Informal Council Meeting January 28, 1970 Page 2 1. It was the concensus of many of the citizens present that the school board and the city council should work together more closely to get the school to hold the line on taxes. There was concern about school taxes as it affects business. 2. Many of the businessmen were in favor of an industrial park within the city. 3. Some were in favor of lower cost housing, but land costs were a factor towards their construction. 4. Some complaints were made against the Planning and Zoning Commission in actions they had taken in the past. Some favored representation on the Commission which they felt was not the case. 5. Better thoroughfare system in the city was stressed by one as a primary need. 6. Attracting more businesses, as well as people in College Station. One present said no one encouraged him to establish a business. City lacked someone to "push". 7. Closing of businesses on Sunday. 8. Extending water service to areas presently not served in the city (who should bear the cost initially) ? 9. Paving of streets (non curb and gutter) was stressed as need. 10. Need to reconsider appointment of Industrial Committee. 11. Need to have some group"push" for College Station. ATTEST: City Secretary las APPROVED: Mayor
