HomeMy WebLinkAbout"War Hymn" Letter to the Editor 8/31/11 Published Wednesday, August 31, 2011 12:05 AM Letters for August 31 Start singing first verse of 'Aggie War Hymn' If Texas A&M moves to the SEC, do Aggie fans realize what this might do to the singing of the Aggie War Hymn? For years, regardless of the football team A&M was playing, we have sung "goodbye to Texas University" which is the lyrics to the second verse of the Aggie War Hymn. Ever think about it? Playing one team and singing about another? Now, with the possibility of A&M and UT not being in the same conference and perhaps not even playing each other annually, maybe it's time to further review the matter. There's no fan action or bonding activity in college football greater than "sawing varsity's horns off." It is the best. And it has to mean a great deal to Aggie players to hear and see students and fans in the stands displaying their loyal support for the Maroon and White. There will always be that "feeling" about that "other school" in Austin, so let's keep "sawing varsity's horns off' but also sing the first verse of the Aggie War Hymn. For those of you who do not know the words (or even realize there was another verse to the Aggie War Hymn), here are the words to the first verse of the Aggie War Hymn. Keep 'em handy, one never knows what might happen. First Verse, Aggie War Hymn: All hail! To dear old Texas A and M, Rally around Maroon and White; Good luck to the dear old Texas Aggies, They are the boys who show the fight, That good old Texas Aggie spirit thrills us, And makes us yell and yell and yell; So let's fight for dear old Texas A and M, We're gonna beat you all to Chiggarroogarrem! Chiggarroogarrem! Rough! Tough! Real Stuff! Texas A and M. And just as it has always been, everyone can start sawing varsity's horns off. JIMMY TYREE, '54 Former Aggie yell leader College Station
