Dear Dr. & Mrs. Sicilio,
In the Fall 1991, the City of College Station PARD became the guardians of the remains of five
individuals including Richard Carter, the Founding Father of Brazos County, his wife, one of his
daughters and two unknown persons.
The fence, headstones, and all visible remains were removed from the original cemetery site in the early
to mid 1960's. None of these have been recovered to date, and the grave sites had been "lost" since the
60's, except by the memories of early residences as to the general area of the site.
In the late summer of 1991, we were contacted by a local developer that owned the property which was
suspected to contain the cemetery. He informed us that Scott & White was seeking to purchase the
parcel and therefore wanted to find and move the cemetery. Old photos were used to identify a tree with
a very particular limb pattern. With the help from numerous individuals in the community we were able
to locate and successfully move all five graves to their present resting site across the street in a city park.
Richard Carter Park is a historic park which honors this founding settler with plaques, welisite,
information boards, etc. Citizens and school children visit this park to enjoy its beauty and to learn
about Richard Carter.
We appreciate the opportunity to preserve the local history and be the caretakers of this family
cemetery. All cost associated with the exhumation, reinternment and decorative fencing have been
borne by others. The final task is to have the original headstones reproduced from photographs and
installed. This would put the finishing touches on} project, and serve as a perpetual reminder of our
heritage.
We are seeking donations totaling $5,000 for the crafting and installation of five headstones at Richard
Carter Park. We plan to mount a plaque on the fence surrounding the family plot with a suitable
inscription recognizing contributors. On April 10, 1992, a ceremony at the cemetery will dedicate its
new and final home. Donors will be recognized at that time.
I appreciate your time and attention concerning this project. Enclosed you will find additional material
and if any further information is needed, don't hesitate to call me at 764 -3773.
Sincerely,
David Gerling
