Beachy, Director Parks and Recreation City of College Station P. 0. Box 9960 College Station, TX 77842 -9960 Dear Steve: would greatly appreciate it if you would work with Dr. John Blackburn of some other appropriate person in the city of Bryan to plan the dedication of the historical marker for the Bryan and College Interurban Railroad for some time late this fall. I am unable at the moment to lay my hands on the letter we both received from the Texas Historical Commission stating that it would be ready for shipment in approximately 12 weeks from the date of the letter. think that this might be a good time to involve the Mayors and possibly the City Councils of both cities in a marker dedication. Perhaps both mayors could be asked to speak briefly and the city council members could be invited. It might also be a appropriate to invite someone from the Brazos Transit Authority to say a few words about public transit. I think that perhaps the major speaker might be Joan Rabins, who wrote the marker application narrative. If we can have the dedication on a week day in either the late morning or early afternoon, then I have hopes that we might get some coverage from the local papers and the television station. I can do a press release and send or deliver it to those agencies once we have a date and time chosen and a program fairly well outlined. I will be willing to write the letters of invitation to the mayors, the city council members, and the Transit Authority if you wish. am asking this of you since you have done such a good job of planning the dedications in College Station and you are in the know about the construction project on College Main. I do not know if that project might affect the scheduling of a dedication program, but you would know. When the City Manager of Bryan sent me their check for half of the marker he gave me the name of Dr. Blackburn and also expressed interest in some landscaping around the marker. With the street being reconstructed, I would guess that such landscaping would have to be done after the construction project is completed. Perhaps you can discuss this with him. I do not know if such landscaping fits into any plans of your department or some other agency of College Station, but perhaps you can discover that easier than I can. At the present time the only time that I will be out of town during the months of October - December is around Christmas. Thus, just about any time that you and a counterpart in Bryan can agree upon should be fine with me. My schedule during the day during the week is flexible enough so that I can be available just about any time of the day on any day of the week. I do want very much for this to be done in 1995 as we need to have and document a marker dedication during this calendar year for our Distinguished Service Award project for the Texas Historical Commission. If you have any questions or need assistance from me, call me at 862 -1555 any day between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. I will be on vacation August 4 -23 and at a meeting in Washington, DC August 29- September 3. Other than that, I should be here just about all of the time until Christmas. Thanks for all of your help in the past. Sincerely yours, Charles R. Schultz, Chair Brazos County Historical Commission
