SUBJECT: Presidential Corridor Meeting
Here are some of the key points that were discussed at the meeting in Austin on January
17th. This was the initial meeting of the group and served to outline the need for a unified
approach to market the historical significance of this area. A second meeting was held on
January 31st that I did not attend. Representatives from our local Convention and Visitors
Bureau are participating in this effort and attended both meetings.
• The "Presidential Corridor" is a tourism marketing strategy to link the five counties
located between the Bush Library in College Station and the Johnson Library in
Austin. The counties include Brazos, Lee, Travis, Bastrop and Burleson.
• Lists of all tourist attractions and events are needed with emphasis on historical sites.
• Some type of brochure will be produced to promote the Presidential Corridor.
• An Internet home page linkage will be established for all communities in the corridor.
• Each community will need to develop brochures, souvenirs, etc.
• The Texas Historical Commission is going to inventory all historical markers in the
state and put this information on the internet.
• Get photos of interesting or unusual sites for potential movie set locations.
• Tourism emphasis will be placed on east to west bus tour operators.
I provided an updated list of all state historical markers in Brazos County as well as those
sites identified on the National Historic Register and City designated historic buildings.
Also, I provided them with a copy of the current brochure that is distributed locally. This
needs to be updated prior to the opening of the Bush Library. That effort should be
included in 1997 budget plans for the various participating agencies.
I hope that this information is of use to the Commission.

Certified Leisure Professional, I like that. Thank you for the
historical marker information on Brazos County; it will be very
helpful to us when the Historical Markers (HM) 2000 Project comes
to Brazos County.
Brazos County is among the counties included in the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Bryan District. The HM 2000
Project is tentatively scheduled to conduct survey and repair work
in TxDOT's Bryan District in October and November of 1996. I will
contact the Brazos County Historical Commission well before our
arrival so that together we can realize the fullest benefit from
the Project for Brazos County.

Dear Dr. Schultz:
As a matter of information, I am working with an ad hoc committee for the Presidential Corridor
Association between the existing presidential library for Lyndon B. Johnson and the proposed
library for former President Bush in College Station. The linkage of these libraries affords an
unique opportunity to promote the towns and communities between them.
In an effort to identify tourist destinations, I have compiled listings of National Register properties
and Texas Historical Markers in the counties through which this route will proceed. It is
proposed that there will be a brochure produced which will be available at both libraries for those
anticipated visitors. The highway corridor will be identified by signs with a logo for the
presidential corridor, and that logo will be used on stationery and publications authorized by the
committee.
This corridor can only increase in usage by tourists as Texas will have the distinction of two
presidential libraries, and already, the Johnson Presidential Library is the most visited presidential
library in the country. The addition of the Bush Library will only enhance and increase that
visitation. The towns and communities between the two libraries should not just be "pass -
throughs" but should provide destinations which encourage tourists to stop in and perhaps visit a
cemetery, check out a courthouse, or have lunch, etc. This is an economic incentive for you with
little or no investment required!
I've digressed, but I hope you can enjoy our enthusiasm as we establish this corridor. PLEASE
