Clint Phillips Pete and Mary Rodriguez 4. A "leveling of the cornerstone" ceremony on the A &M Josephine Scarmardo Sam and Louise Sharp campus featuring appropriate music and the Masons. David and Melina Shellenberger Nova and Val Silvy 5. A reception by special invitation to President and Mrs. Preston and Elizabeth Smith Mobley's home. THE TEXAS ARMY WILL HELP THIRD GRADE CHILDREN AT COLLEGE HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO EXPERIENCE LIFE ON THE TEXAS FRONTIER WHEN THEY ARE "ENROUTE TO THEIR CLAIMS" ON NOVEMBER 15. THEY WILL ENCAMP IN THE GRASSY LEA NEAR THE WOODS BEHIND THE GYM ON WILLIAMS STREET. DURING THEIR SOJOURN AT COLLEGE HILLS, THE CHILDREN WILL RECEIVE INSTRUCTION IN BUILDING TEMPORARY SHELTERS, TANNING HIDES, WEAPONRY, FIRE MAKING, COOKING, CANDLE MAKING, AND CASTING MUSKET BALLS. ATTIRED IN CLOTHING OF THE PERIOD AND USING VESSELS AND METHODS OF THE TIMES, THESE HISTORICAL VOLUNTEERS IN THE TEXAS ARMY WILL PROVIDE THE CLASSES WITH A LIVING IMAGE THAT THEY CAN RECALL AS THEY STUDY TEXAS HISTORY. THE TEXAS ARMY HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED IN 1835; BUT IT WAS GOVERNOR PRESTON SMITH WHO REACTIVATED IT ON JUNE 24, 1969, AND WHO APPOINTED GENERAL CARROLL LEWIS AS COMMANDER. GENERAL LEWIS IS STILL THE COMMANDER AND TODAY'S TEXAS ARMY IS AN HISTORICAL ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES MUSKET SALU'TE5 AND ENCAMPMENTS Ai VARIOUS HISTORICAL EVENTS INCLUDING REENACTMENT OF LIFE I N THE 1800'S. He soon became the tutor of the children of Richard and Elizabeth Carter, establishing the first school in Brazos County. Mitchell was the guiding spirit of Boonville, the first town in Brazos County and the county seat. His greatest gift. to the county was bringing the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas to Brazos County in 1871.
