® TUESDAY, MAY 8, 1990, 3:00 PM
COMMUNITY CENTER CONFERENCE ROOM
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dan MacElvray, Joan Rabins, Lois Beach.
STAFF PRESENT: Charles Szabuniewicz, Special Facilities
Superintendent; Emily Baker,
Secretary/Receptionist.
This committee was brought together to give us some guidelines for historic
plaques for the historical homes and buildings in College Station.
The Historic Preservation Committee decided to provide the owners of old
homes and buildings (50 years and older) with an historic plaque and we are
using as our symbol the train station on the plaque. Dan commented that
the black square was crooked on the illustration that Southwell Co. sent us.
The only guidelines the committee set up was a very broad criteria; any
campus homes that were moved and not substantially altered would be
eligible almost automatically. We would need Dan's input on the homes in
College Station that have been on site for 50 years. We need an application
set up. Dan suggested first that on the plaque "Historic Home" should be
changed to "Historic House ". Charlie mentioned to Dan and Joan about the
plaques for Shiloh, Lincoln and A &M Consolidated. Dan mentioned the Jr.
High building next to the Community Center that is being torn down that
launched the firm of Caudell, Rowlett and Scott, the largest architectural
engineering firm in the world. The building has been drastically altered, but
the site could have an historical marker after it is torn down. Dan said that
"50 years" is flexible, that the homes and buildings that have not been around
for 50 years could still have a plaque as long as they have some sort of
significance. Dan said there are guidelines for substantially altered" and he
will give us a copy. He said that the homes can be altered as much as they
want to on the interior but there are guidelines for the exterior alterations.
Lois mentioned that Joan Lampkin would be writing up a tour brochure on
historic homes and buildings and Dan suggested we take it one step further
and have a monograph publication (20-301 page brochure). He suggested
that a student do that for credit and it would be about $8- 10,000 to work it
up. That would come out of Hotel/Motel Fund.
Dan suggested the campus homes that have already been moved to move
them to the new Wolf Pen Creek so they would have a specific use such as
craft stores, visitors center, etc. That way they will be used and not just
vacant. The guidelines for historic marker are: 50 years old, do the have
historical significance, unique architectural style, famous architect, famous
person lived there, famous event happened there. Dan and Joan are to set
up a general citeria for the Committee to review.
Charlie suggested that a journalism student could do a project now before a
site is torn down and when it applies to State Historical Requirements, we
could have it ready. Dan said students could measure drawings of structures
for credit. The drawings some students have produced in mylar are
beautiful. He suggested we contact David Woodcott to use some of his
students.
Lois asked Dan and Joan to draw up the criteria and get back with us.
Charlie said he would keep them informed on what the Historic Preservation
Committee was up to.
