Of these, 11 applicants have been placed in either a regular or temporary project. COPS AND LOBSTERS EVENT A SUCCESS The College Station Police Department raised over $12,000 for the Special Olympics during the recent Cops and Lobsters event at Red Lobster. The officers provided security for the event and waited on the customers, with their tips going to benefit Special Olympics. The organizers of the event were Lt. Scott Simpson, Sgt. Chuck Fleeger, and Officer Rick Vessell. • CITY BUYS NEW FIRE TRUCK The Fire Department has received a new 1999 Pierce -2000 Pumper to be placed at Station #1. Budgeted for this fiscal year, the $256,000 custom apparatus was built with separate air conditioning systems to house EMS supplies needed for the engines ALS (advanced life support) capabilities. The pumper was designed using an aerial cab and frame, making it look much larger than the other on -line engines. WHAT'S DEVELOPING IN COLLEGE STATION? During the month of June, the following development projects were brought in the Development Services Department for review: Best Buy: A site plan for a store located in the Lone Star Pavilion shopping center located at the corner of Texas Avenue and Lincoln Drive. SecurCare Mini - Warehouse: A site plan for a self - storage facility located at 625 Graham Road at the corner of Victoria Avenue, on 1.819 acres, zoned M -2. Gateway: A preliminary plat for a shopping center located at the corner of State Highway 6 and FM 60 (University Drive East); on 76.26 acres, zoned R -5 and CB. Spencer's Cove:: A Final Plat for 5.09 acres located in the ETJ, 1 mile south of Royder Community on I & GN Road; 3 lots. MAY 1999 SALES AND USE TAX RECEIPTS The May 1999 receipts for April sales were $839,718, which is a 7.6% increase from May 1998. The amount collected for Fiscal Year 1999 is $7,848,423, and has increased 6.76% from the same time last year. Sales tax revenues are currently $203,223 above the amount budgeted for FY 99. With the fiscal year more than half over, it is anticipated that FY 99 sales tax collections will meet or exceed the projected 4% increase over FY 98. Page 7 BUILDING REPORT FOR MAY 1999 Development Services issued 1 71 building permits during May 1999. The number of permits issued for residential remodel is still seeing a remarkable increase as homeowners have their roofs and homes repaired as a result of the major hail storm from earlier this year. MOMENTS OF TRUTH The Brazos Valley Small Business Development Center thanked the City of College Station for co- sponsoring the 1999 Business Opportunities Fair. The Fair was on May 27, and educated entrepreneurs on governmental procurement opportunities and united small business owners with purchasing agents. Based on the interest and comments received, the Brazos Valley Small Business Development Center is planning to make this a biannual event. Mervin and Nell Cook of Houston thanked the Parks staff that assisted with the Bluegrass in Central Park Festival. They were impressed with the show, which in their opinion was "one of the best yet." The College Station Fire Department congratulated Lt. Rodney O'Connor on his retirement from the Fire Department after 27 years of service to the City of College Station. Rodney was honored with a reception at the Fire Administration Building on May 27. Mike Mullen received a thank you from the staff of the City Secretary's Office for his helping a citizen. Mike is the Volunteer Coordinator for the City and assisted a citizen who was interested in volunteering his time to help City staff. The City Secretary's Office staff thanked Mike for reassuring them that they had handled the situation properly as they were trying to service citizens with care and concern for their needs. Kris Keller, an accounting assistant, was recognized by the Accounting Division for her efforts in working with Utility Customer Service to ensure that the interface between the CX system and the GMBA system worked correctly. Phillip Guillen, a staff accountant, was selected as the 1999 recipient of the Government Finance Officers Association's (GFOA) Public Investor Scholarship. Band appeared before the council to discuss the plumbing inspec- tions and the present ordinance which is out - dated. It was agreed that at the time they present a revised ordinance to the Bryan Council they would else present a copy to the city council of College Station for 0OnSidera'tion.
