Well, haven't been near kitchen. Couldn't reach Tommie Preston, left word for him to call but
have found out he isn't a "native "..they_ came on the scene later so probably won't be much
help other than recall.
James Steen is a wealth of info and in fact, almost led me house to house. He said Lillie
Wallace is "Lizzie" Wallace, and that she raised two girls who now live in Calif.
He is going to try and track them down tonight for addresses, etc. Said supposition that
Wallaces were "cheated" out of their and was entirely correct... it was a long way to
courthouse, money was scarce, etc. There is a Mrs. Martha Moore who figures prominently
in his memory. And you are correct._.those people's homes were moved from the area. He
said Mrs. Moore's house was moved to Wellborn Rd around Luther St., The Davis' whom he
remembers, were moved to where Judd's is now at Holleman and Wellborn. Eddie Chew is
dead, but Jr. Lives in San Antonio. He thinks the Wallace house may have been moved to
Park Place near Texas in that area.
M. D. Davis' wife was named Mary. And, he said that Mrs. Robbie Clark, mother of A. C.
Clark, the preacher: has a fantastic memory and could help us no end. Oh, the area around
4 Park Place where he thinks the Wallace house went was Spring Green, near what is now
Long John Silvers
He said he is overjoyed that this is being researched by you because the city is putting
out a lot of false information about the area and the black people are upset by it. He said
there is indeed a wonderful black history that a young woman did and he is going to get me
a copy of it. He said the story of this neighborhood has needed to be told for many
years. /.../ /the whites really did cheat the blacks out of the land. Guess they learned that
from the Indians, huh?
At any rate, he is fired up, will get back with me, and I will try and see what I can find out
from Tommie P. James will be a big help, I know. Hope this will help a little bit.
Gotta go eat. Luv N
