Bryan Bluegrass Festival Tanglewood Park June 7 3:00 -10:00 p.m. Bring your picnic basket and lawnchair and enjoy a variety of bluegrass music. Free admission. For additional information concerning special events, call 779 -5622, ext 321 Enrichment Playground: Activities include swimming, field trips, sports and arts and crafts. There are two sessions: June 6 -30 and July 7 -30. The program meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and is designed for the 6 -12 age bracket. The coy: is $20 per child, per session. Playground locations include Crockett, Fannin and Lamar schools. Bryan Utility Lake Park:B.U.L.P. on Sandy Point Road is only six miles from downtown. Its two lakes, totaling 850 surface acres, have been stocked with bass, catfish and pike. Facilities in this 1,060 acre park include a boatramp, fishing pier, picnic pavilion, picnic tables and restrooms. Overnight camping is permissible and cost is $3.00 per camper, per night. Open gym: The Kemp School Gym is available to Bryan residents at no cost from June 9 to August 16, Tuesday- Saturday, from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. Recreational equipment may be checked out from the attendant who will be present while the gym is open. Office hours are Monday- Friday, 8:00 a.m - -noon and 1:00 -5:00 p.m. During office hours, for more information concerning recreation activities, call 779 -5622, ext. 323. For your convenience, a 24 -hour information line is also available, 775 -2204. This recording carries current information on athletics, registration, and activities. Facility Reservations: Swimming pools, picnic pavilions, and ballfields are available to be reserved for a nominal fee. For details, please call the recreation office at 779 -5622, ext. 323. Policies: It is the policy of the recreation division that refunds will not be given. City parks will be reserved only for school picnics. Aquatics Public Swimming: Presently, the Bryan Aquatic Center (BAC), located behind Bryan High School football stadium, is open for public swimming. The hours of operation through May 30 are: Mon. -Fri. 6:00 -8:00 a.m. (adult lap swimming), 11:30 -1:30 p.m., 3:30 -6:30 p.m.; Sat. -Sun. noon -6:30 p.m. Admission is $1.25 per day, per session. Annual and seasonal passes may be purchased: call the BAC at 776 -4264 for details. Summer swimming begins May 31 with the BAC hours changing to noon -1:00 p.m. (adult lap swimming) and 1:00 -9:00 p.m. (public swimming) seven days a week. The seasonal pools will open May 31 as well. Instructional Swimming: Spring classes include Advanced Lifesaving (AL) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI). AL is March 31 - April 10, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., Mon. - Thurs. Test day is April 12 from 9:00- noon. Prerequisites: minimum age 15 and good swimming skills. WSI class begins April 14 at 6:30 p.m. with remaining schedule to be determined at initial meeting. Prerequisites: minimum age 17 and a current AL certificate. Summer classes are taught in four sessions: June 2 - 13, June 16 - 27, July 7 - 18, and July 21 - August 1. All registration will take place at the Bryan Aquatic Center from 9:00 a. m. - noon on the following dates: May 31 (1st session only), June 14 (2nd session only), June 28 (3rd session only) and July 19 (4th session only). There is no on -going registration. Classes are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors with a cost of S10 per person, per session. Tanks and regulators will be provided and the cost is S130. Registration is at BAC during public swimming hours. Completion of this course results in certification with either PAD and /or NAUI. Sessions begin on each of the following dates: April 12, May 12, June 2, June 16, July 7, July 21, August 4. Each class begins at 7:00 p.m. except for the April 21 and May 12 sessions, which start at 6:30 p.m. All sessions offer the basic course and the June 16 session offers the advanced course as well as basic. Aquatic Special Events: Scuba Night Introductory BAC 7:00 -9:00 p.m. on April 11, May 9, and September 12 9:00 -11:00 p.m. on June 13, July 11, and August 1 A certified scuba instructor will be present to answer questions and introduce the sport of scuba diving. Those already certified can bring their own gear and brush up on skills. A minimal fee will be charged.
