CITY OF COLLEGE STATION
City of College Station Government
The City of College Station was incorporated in
1938. It is a home -rule city and operates under
the Council- Manager form of government. The
Mayor and six Council Members are elected
at- large, by place, in city -wide elections for
three -year terms.
Meetings
City Council meetings normally occur on the 2nd
and 4th Thursday of each month at College Station
City Hall. Council meetings are open to the public
and broadcast live on Channel 19 and www.cstx.gov.

allows on- demand access to Council meetings, Plan-
ning and Zoning meetings, and other content from
the Public Communications Department. You can
also catch the latest College Station Now magazine -
style show, view job postings, and much more.
* Tune into 1690 AM, the city's emergency advi-
sory radio station, to receive up- to-the- minute reports
in the event of a flash flood, Amber Alert, terror threat,
or other emergency. During non - emergency times,
the city will inform motorists of street repairs, traffic
hazards, public notices, travel advisories, city history
and visitor information.

Dear College Station Residents:
This is the first time in many years that I find myself back working with the
College Station Parks and Recreation Department and its many talented and
highly skilled staff members. It is both an honor and a privilege to be able to
be a part of such a wonderful and nationally accredited department. My fam-
ily and I are very fortunate to have been able to come back to work with thisgreat city and staff. Every
day we all strive to keep providing that very necessary quality of life for your continued enjoyment and
use.
This past year was a whirlwind of activity filled with many new initiatives for the department. We started
construction on the new Memorial Cemetery, located across the street from Easterwood Airport. This
facility will go along way toward helping meet the future cemetery needs for our community. It even has
a very special and distinctive section that is called the Aggie Field of Honor. We were able to construct
three more badly needed neighborhood park facilities to help meet the many recreational needs of our
residents as College Station continues to grow. Our department also grew in scope with the new addi-
tion of the Heritage Programs activities this past year. It is said that every successful parks and recreation
department has a strong historical component or orientation. We also had over 1,000 participants in the
very popular Kids Klub Program that continues to be an investment in our future.
Our parks and recreation staff has made every effort to provide you with this 2009 calendar that includes
as much information and as many ideas as possible to help you decide what essential recreation services
you want to participate in for yourself, your family and friends. This calendar is a core product of the
many parks and recreation traditions that the department has established over the years thanks to your
continued support. We are truly committed to meeting or exceeding your expectations for service and a
healthy life style.
Our staff has introduced many recreation programs that have become the standard or model that other
communities seek to implement in their own communities. One example of this effort is the very popular
Christmas in the Park Holiday Celebration. This one program allows everyone to choose their own level
of participation. It can be as simple as driving by Stephen C. Beachy Central Park to enjoy the fantastic
light display or as exciting as riding on a hayride through the park after having had a visit with Santa.
There is always something for everyone!
At the end of the day, we have to say that we can only improve our parks and recreation programs and
facilities with your continued support. We need your suggestions and your volunteer efforts to help us
continue to improve. Our staff fully understands the need for another set of eyes to help point out what-
ever we might have missed. Thank you for caring about your parks and recreation system. Please feel
free to contact us for any additional information or assistance that you might require.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not take this time to formally recognize our former parks and recreation
director, Mr. Steve Beachy. In his long and prosperous parks and recreation career, Steve established a
legacy in the parks and recreation field in Texas for others to follow. He set the bar high for innovation and
top quality in all aspects of this essential service to the community. His results are allover this community,
but most importantly they live on in the hearts of so many people that have grown to love the outdoors
and all forms of recreation due to his commitment to his City, his department and the residents of College
Station. As a salute to our leader, we dedicate this calendar to Steve!

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB MEMBERSHIP: Programs and activi-
ties are offered in the core areas of character and leadership de-
velopment, education and career development, the arts, sports,
fitness, recreation, health and life skills. Membership is required
for $20.00 for the school year (9 MONTHS). Summer rates are
$50.00 for Brazos Valley residents and $100.00 for non- Brazos
Valley residents. Families with more than three children are
eligible for a family rate and discounts. Low - income families are eligible for a special rate. After school
hours are: Monday - Friday from 3 pm - 7 pm and Saturday (Special Programs). Summer program hours
are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.
Workshops: Workshops are scheduled in a collaborative effort with many involved agencies to meet the
educational and informational needs of our customers during the calendar year.
COMPETITIVE BASKETBALL & CO -REC VOLLEYBALL: Lincoln Recreation Center offers community and
spring/summer tournaments, and has the capacity for league play.
GYM RESERVATIONS: The gym can be reserved for team play, special events, and community functions.
Reservations must be made by 4 pm, 48 hours prior to the reservation date. Fees range from $25.00 to
$35.00 per hour and all day use for $225.00, with a deposit of $250.00. Rental fees are subject to a
$20.00 after -hour charge and set -up /janitorial fees.
COMMUNITY ROOM RENTAL: Reservations can be made for the Community Room by paying a $100.00
deposit and a $25.00 /hour rental fee with a 3 hour maximum. A kitchen is available with t room ren
for an additional $20.00 fee. Other small rooms may be available. Fees are subject to before and after
hour charges, plus set up and janitorial fees.
COMPUTER LAB: Supervised after - school tutorial program for school aged children 6 - 18. This is a col-
laborative effort between TAMU, College Station Parks and Recreation Department, and College Station
Independent School District to meet the computer needs of disadvantaged youth. With the emphasis
on reading and accelerated math instruction and T.A.K.S. preparation, these students will have access to
CSISD web site, College Station Library references, and the Internet. Lab hours are M - F, 3 pm, Saturday
12 pm - 5 pm, and Sunday as needed. Transportation is available to the lab from A &M Consolidated
Middle School, Oakwood Intermediate, College Hills, South Knoll, and Rock Prairie Elementary. CSISD
Bus transportation is available from Cypress Grove Intermediate, College Station Middle School, Pebble
Creek, Southwood and Forest Ridge Elementary.
SENIOR CITIZENS (BVCAA Years for Profit): This program at the Lincoln Center provides nutritious
meals for all persons 55 years of age and older. Daily programs such as arts and crafts, dominoes, bingo,
field trips, and computer classes are offered. Call 979 - 764 -3750 for more information.

Program offers parenting classes as requested.
Immunization: Brazos County Health Department offers immunizations every Tuesday from 9:00 am -

(WIC) Women, Infant and Children: Services are available at Lincoln Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm.
Brazos Food Bank: Case Management, intake and referral every Monday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. For
an appointment, call 979 - 779 -3663.
Community Service and Volunteer Site: Court- appointed community service hours available M - F,
8 am - 2 pm, 6 pm - 9 pm, and weekends. Weekly orientation is mandatory before serving hours. Vol-
unteer service time is available as well. Orientation date for volunteers is every Monday at 5:30 pm.
Background checks are necessary.
Adult Probation: Brazos Valley Adult Probation meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 pm to 5 pm.
Annual Events: MLK Celebration, African American History Month, Easter Egg Hunt, Juneteenth Cele-

The Exit Teen Center is a great after - school place for 6th - 9th — —
graders. The Teen Advisory Board was involved throughout the design and development of this building
that includes a club style room, an all- purpose room and a computer lab. The construction was completed
in September of 1999.

The Amphitheater has established a remarkable reputation for

The City of College Station has acquired 56.57 acres of land for the
new municipal cemetery. Approximately 20 acres will be designated as the Aggie Field of Honor and
marketed to students, former students, faculty, staff, family, and friends of Texas A &M University. The
remaining acreage will be developed as a municipal cemetery. Phase I will be approximately 10 acres
in size, with 5 acres each for the municipal cemetery and Aggie Field of Honor sections. Spring 2009 is
the potential operation date for this new cemetery.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board exists to advise the City Council on all matters concerning the establishment, maintenance, and
operations of all parks within the City of College Station. This board also gives advice regarding the establishment and operation of recreation
programs conducted by the City of College Station for its citizens. The board carries out all other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned
by City Council.
Stephen C. Beachy Central Park 2008 TRAPS Honorary Life Member
Stephen C. Beachy Central Park was officially dedicated to the re-
tired Parks and Recreation Director, Stephen C. Beachy on October
17, 2008, honoring his 30 years of dedicated service and contribu-
tions to the City of College Station. While Beachy retired in 2007,
he continues to stay active, serving as the President of the Brazos
Valley Veterans Memorial Committee.
The Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) recognized
Stephen C. Beachy, retired Parks and Recreation Director of
the City of College Station, for his career contributions to the
field of parks and recreation by awarding him the 2008 TRAPS
Honorary Life Membership Award. This is a very selective
process with fewer than ten life members in a state member-
ship of over 1,000 members.
Beachy received this honor at the 2008 TRAPS State Institute
and Trade Show Awards Banquet in San Angelo, TX on Friday,
March 28, 2008. He was recognized and honored for his
significant service to TRAPS through the years, as well as his
outstanding contributions to the parks and recreation field.

2007 - 2008 EMPLOYEE
OF THE YEAR AWARD
Geraldine "Geri" Marsh, Athletic Supervisor,
who has served the city for the past 10 years, was
named Employee of the Year for her dedication,
leadership and tireless efforts in coordinating,
collecting data and taking steps that finally earned
the College Station Parks Department national
recognition and accreditation in 2007. Only 4
other cities in Texas and 76 nationwide have
earned this accreditation.
2008 Hometown Hero Award
Geraldine "Geri" Marsh, Athletic Supervisor, was honored with the
Hometown Hero Award in May 2008 for her efforts in increasing local
tourism by bringing the USA/ASA Girl's 18 and Under Class "A" Fast
Pitch National Championship to our community in August 2007. She has
played a significant role in attracting tournaments of this nature over the
last 10 years. This event brings more than 5,000 participants from across
the United States once a year to compete for the title. It is estimated that
this tournament alone brought an economic impact of over $2 Million
into our community. The Bryan - College Station Convention and Visitors
Bureau along with the Brazos Valley Lodging Association has awarded
over 93 local residents with this honor since 2001.
2007 - 2008 Amateur Softball Association
James Farrell Award of Excellence
This award was presented to College Station Athletics for achieving a rating
of 90 or above from the participants and the player representatives for the
ASA U18 Girls Fastpitch National Softball Tournament. Our tournament
score achieved a perfect "100" rating.

PROFESSIONALISM
The Summer 2008 College Station lifeguard team placed 5th in
the International Competition and 1st in the Southwest Region Ellis
and Associates International Lifeguard Challenge in Chicago, Illinois
on July 30 -31, 2008. Earlier in the summer, the team placed second
in Ellis and Associates Southwest Region Lifeguard Challenge and also
qualified for the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation State Competition
in San Antonio, Texas. Members of the winning team and coaches are
