Ernest K. Langford, later known as the “Father of College Station”, served as mayor for 24 years. He was born on May 30, 1891 in Ballinger, Texas. Langford received a bachelor’s degree
from Texas A. & M. in 1913. After his graduation, Langford apprenticed at an architecture firm in Austin and three years later, began teaching at the University of Illinois where he
also received a master’s degree. He returned to Texas A. & M. in 1925 to teach architecture. In 1929 Langford became the head of the department of architecture at A&M. In his long career,
Langford focused on providing for the residents of College Station rather than stimulate the commercial opportunities in the area. Mayor Langford’s term: • Helped design the new facilities
for A&M Consolidated when they moved off campus • 1942 -City created a city manager position filled by an employee • 1947 -Created a Parks Board and established the first city park •
Created Advisory Committee, Sanitary Conditions Committee, and Human Relations Council • 1951 -““War of Annexation” between College Station and Bryan • 19 50s -College Station took over
control their own electricity and water • 1953 -Appointed a five man Recreation Board • 1954 -College Station approves the bond for a sewage facility • 1957 -City put $500,000 toward
major street repairs • February 1957 -Brazos County Planning Commission established to oversee growth of College Station, Texas A&M College, and Bryan • 1958 -Planning and Zoning Committees
were combined • 1964 -Alfred Boyett was dissatisfied 1942 Ernest K. Langford 1966 with the condemnation of his property to establish a highway, and took his case to court • 1965 -Council
members asked the Chamber of Commerce to let in light industry, which led to the Industrial Development Committee.
