HomeMy WebLinkAboutMayor Andy Anderson 1966 David (andy) Anderson 1971 David A. Anderson, known as “Andy”, was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1934 with a degree in forestry. He began his professional career with the United States Department of Agriculture, then the Texas Forest Service in 1936 and moved to College Station in 1939. He represented Ward Two from 1957-63 and served two years on the Planning and Zoning Committee beginning in 1963. When he was elected, Anderson was head of the Information and Education Department of the Texas Forest Service at A&M. He believed that the government should be active in the lives of the citizens of College Station. He also disliked combining College Station and Bryan and tried to promote College Station as an independent city away from Bryan. Mayor Anderson’s term: • “We were no longer a little community. We had to think big and grow big.” • 1967 -Submitted his first five-year plan to the city council which detailed his “capital improvements” program, including a police and fire station, a new city park, expanding the sewage disposal plant and a cultural center • 1970 -City’s first personnel manual • Established 12 committees for health, beautification, airport zoning and safety • Created Mayor’s Special Committee to uplift African -American neighborhoods • Lincoln School became a recreational center for African-Americans after the fire of 1966 • March 21, 1970 -City Hall and Police/Fire Department dedicated with an open house • Obtained the national emergency number, 911, for College Station, one of the first cities in Texas and the Southwest to use this service • 1971 -His seventeen goals focused on municipal self sufficiency (water source and electricity) • 1971 -Anderson resigned because he could not afford to go too long without pay as decided in 1970.
