Christmas in the Park
A Holiday Tradition
C hristmas in the Park is a month -long
holiday celebration that includes more than
1 million lights decorating the beautiful
47 -acre Stephen C. Beachy Central Park.
The event begins on Thanksgiving and
continues through New Year's Day with
lights on from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. each day.
In its 27 -year history, Christmas in the Park
has attracted more than 2 million visitors,
including many who have made Christmas
in the Park an annual family tradition.

Special activities are scheduled for mid -
December, starting with a holiday baking
contest on Thursday, Dec. 9. Entries will be
accepted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Awards
include over $800 in gift cards and prizes.
On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11, visitors
can tour the park on an old- fashioned
hayride and enjoy free cookies, hot cocoa,
live entertainment, reindeer games and
more. In addition, Santa will take a break
from his Christmas preparations to drop in
for photos with the children.
Bring Your Pets night is Tuesday, Dec. 14
from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pets can take
their owners on a stroll through the park
and pose for photos with Santa.
Private reservations are available for
photos with Santa on Dec. 10 (2 -4 p.m.),
Dec. 12 (5 -8 p.m.), Dec. 15 (6 -9 p.m.) and
Dec. 16 (6 -9 p.m.).
A minimal charge will apply. Large
businesses can reserve an entire evening
for their workforce family by calling

"Christmas in the Park is everything you
want in a holiday happening," Parks and
Recreation Supervisor Sheila Walker said.
"If you're looking for entertainment, we've
got that. If you're looking for great cookies
and hot cocoa, we've got the best, and
it's free. If you just want some peace and
quiet or time to reflect, come out on a
Wednesday evening for a walk or a quiet
picnic. Christmas in the Park reflects the
spirit of the season."

Exploring History Lunch Lecture
Col. James R. Woodall, USA (Ret.), a former
commandant of the Texas A &M Corps of
Cadets, will discuss his book, "Texas Aggie
Medals of Honor: Seven Heroes of World
War II" at the Exploring History Lunch
Lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the
College Station Conference Center, which
is located at 1300 George Bush Drive.
FREE Freon Unit Day
The BVSWMA Landfill will be accepting
Freon - containing units for recycling from
7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11.
The service is free and households are
limited to two units each. Freon will be
extracted from refrigerators, freezers, and
air - conditioning units, and the unit will
be recycled as scrap metal. The landfill
is located at 7600 E. Rock Prairie Rd. For

Korean War Memorial Dedication
The new Korean War memorial Katchi
Kapshida will be dedicated at 3 p.m. on
Veteran's Day (Nov. 11) at Veterans Park.
The memorial's focal point is a life -size
sculpture of a Korean soldier and American
soldier standing side -by -side.
at the Carter Creek Wastewater Treatment

Winter Water Fitness
Looking to increase strength and flexibility
while getting a good cardiopulmonary
workout? Registration for the Winter
Water Fitness program begins Monday,
Nov. 15, with classes starting Dec. 1.
Morning and evening classes are available
and are Monday through Friday at the
heated College Station Middle School
Natatorium. Participants must be 12 years
of age or older.
The event starts at 11:30 a.m. A light
luncheon will be served for $5 per person.
The programs arevideotapedand broadcast
weekly on CSTV -19 (Suddenlink). The
series is sponsored by WTAW, DeLucia Mail
Services and HEB Tower Point Market.
The series will have a free bonus lecture
at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, when Glenn
D. Davis will speak on his pictorial history
"College Station" and his book "How We
Lived in Wellborn Before Television"

Attention Businesses
Two new programs designed to reach
active young adults, families and students
are being offered by College Station Parks
& Recreation in conjunction with Brazos
Bounty LLC. This is an opportunity to reach
approximately 150,000 people in 2011.
Katchi Kapshida, meaning "We Go
Together," is the slogan of the long-
standing relationship between the U.S.
military forces and those of the Republic of
Korea. It recognizes a military alliance that
has stood for 60 years.
Much of the memorial's funding was
generously provided by six prominent
Koreans, lead by retired Gen. Paik, Sun
Yup. South Korea's first four -star general,
Gen. Paik and several other benefactors
will be present for the dedication, along
with retired U.S. Army Gen. John H. Tilelli,
Jr., from Washington, D.C.

Computer Club for Seniors
Did you know College Station has a
computer club to help senior citizens
improve their computer skills? The group
has grown from 20 members when it
started in 2001 to almost 200 this year.
The club is also free and features speakers
from Texas A &M, Blinn College and local
businesses.
The Winter Water aerobics class is part of
Xtra Education, a joint venture of College
Station Parks and Recreation Department
and the College Station Independent
School District.

Beachy Central Park from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on weekdays, or online at cstx.gov /parks.

Youth Basketball Registration
Registration for College Station's Youth
Basketball Leagues begins Nov. 15 and
runs through Dec. 3.
The program is open to boys and girls
grades pre -K through 8th grade. The eight -
game season begins in January. Practices
and games are held at various CSISD
gymnasiums and each player receives a
t -shirt and trophy for participation.
Players can register in person from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Parks and
Recreation Office at Stephen C. Beachy
Central Park, or online at parksweb.cstx.gov.
The cost is $55 per player.
