• The storehouse, with stock of merchandise, owned by Mr.
E.B. PUGH, at College Station, was entirely
destroyed by fire last night. The fire is
supposed to be the work of an incendiary. Mr.
PUGH was at the college attending the cadets' ball
when the fire was discovered, and before he was
able to reach the store it was almost entirely
consumed. He was insured in the Liverpool Company
for $2700, which will cover about half his loss.

Genealogists frequently wonder what part their
ancestors may have played in the establishment of Texas
A &M. The following documents provide data on some
local residents who were involved in the college's
early history. Copies of the first two documents (from
the Texas State Archives in Austin) were graciously
furnished by Mrs. Ruth Ann GORDON of Houston. The
third document was copied from the Brazos County
Commissioners minutes. The fourth document was
transcribed from the holdings of the Texas A &M
University Library.

adults and free from any disability whatsoever.
And for the 1226 acres of Land conveyed by J. Fred COX
to the said Agricultural and Mechanical College, the
title is recited above in the rehearsal of the chain of
title to the 210 acres conveyed by RECTOR and wife.
And for the 102 acre tract and the 40 acre tract,
conveyed by H. MITCHELL to said College, the title in
said MITCHELL is evidenced by deed for the same from J.
Fred COX dated May 27 1871 recorded in Book M page 110
and the title of said COX to the same has been
hereinbefore recited. The said MITCHELL also has a
deed for said 40 acres executed by T.J. WOOTEN August
25 1857 recorded in Book H page 530, but being located
on the half of said League not sold by said original
grantee Joseph E. SCOTT, the same was purchased again
from J. Fred COX as above recited. And for the 838
acres his title is evidenced by deeds from W.B.P.
GAINES to John CARSON dated August 8 1853 recorded in
Book D page 243 (the title to GAINES being hereinbefore
recited) and by John CARSON by his Executor James R.
CARSON for a portion of the same, deed dated June 11
1866 -- recorded Book G page 612; James R. CARSON to H.
21
MITCHELL deed dated February 13 1871 recorded in Book M
page 191. And the title to the remainder of the said
838 acres is evidenced by title from the said W.B.P.
GAINES and John CARSON by Executor, deeds dated
respectively December 15 1869 and March 5 1870 recorded
in Book K page 218 and Book I page 11. The Lands
conveyed by said COX and MITCHELL are not, and have not
been, occupied by either of said parties as a
homestead, and hence there is no necessity for a
separate acknowledgment by Mrs. COX and Mrs. MITCHELL.
The plat delineated on the first page hereof represents
the original League of Land granted to Joseph E. SCOTT,
and the portions thereof conveyed by the said Rebecca
RECTOR and husband, J. Fred COX and H. MITCHELL, are
designated by the colored or shaded boundary lines.
To certify all of which I hereunto set my hand and seal
of office at Bryan this 25th day of August AD 1871.

African Americans on Campus:
Here are some notes from the 1880 Brazos co. census
pp.270b -271d
Jane Thornton, a 28 year old single Black woman, was a
cook in the household of Charles P. Estill.
Lizzie McMillan, a 25 year old mulatto, was a cook for
Hardaway Dinwiddie.
James Chatham, a 39 year old Black man, and William
Robertson, a 20 year old Black man, were waiters
under Sbisa. Interestingly, the other mess hall
staff (including cooks) all were white -- at least
the ones who lived on the campus.
In the 1900 Brazos Co- census the campus listings
appear in precinct 7, pp.9a -9b. (This is almost
the very end of the reel).
is There were only three African Americans listed on
campus, but there were also almost no whites. I
didn't think to look at the date, but the census
may have been taken in the middle of summer, when
the campus was normally deserted. Anyhow, the 3
African Americans were:
p.9a -- Adalade Thompson, b.1861, who was a cook in the
household of Charles W. Hudson, prof. of Engl. &
History
p.9a -- George Holland, b.1874 ?, who was a waiter
p.9b -- Jessie Parks, b. 1835, who was a dishwasher
In the 1910 Rrazo- o. renaus the campus listings
appear in Enumeration District 14, sheets 9a -
12a, plus the mess hall listings on sheet 15a.
The census lists many cooks & other workers for private
families; sample listings include:
p.10a -- In the household of Frank MacDougall, Mary
Nero, aged 20, was a privately employed cook
p.10b -- this includes the list of hotel employees,
including:
C
30
Smith, John -- aged 34, cook
Smith, Charley, aged 28, a "black" dishwasher and
his wife Charity Smith, a "mulatto" dishwasher --
according to the census they had been married one
year
Pearce, Edward -- aged 24, a mulatto, a waiter
Finley, Aubrey -- aged 21, a mulatto, a waiter
Motin, Berry -- aged 21, "black ", a waiter
John, James Henry -- aged 23, "black ", a laborer
The mulatto listings raise the question whether there
was some preference to hire lighter skinned Blacks
to work as waiters in the Hotel.
p.12a -- In the household of Mark Francis worked Mollie
Hearn, aged 35, as a cook, as well as Caron ( ?)
Hearn, aged 17, perhaps Mollie's daughter, also as
a cook
p.15a -- workers in the mess hall included many
Hispanics, plus the following African Americans:
Davis, W. -- aged 36 -- cook
Adams, A. -- aged 46 -- cook
Tucker, Edgar -- aged 17 -- dishwasher
Cas, Tom -- aged 19 -- dishwasher
Henry, Frone ( ?) -- aged 38, "black," a chambermaid
Henry, Sallie, -- aged 10, "mulatto ", no occupation
Henry, Rebecka -- aged 7, "mulatto," no occupation
The census indicates that Ms. Frone Henry was single
and was not the mother of any children, so it's
unclear exactly who the two Henry children were
related to -- of course, the census only reports
the facts that people furnished, so there may well
be more to that story than is apparent.
