A Message from the Governor:
"Freedom is a fragile thing.... It is not ours by inheritance; it must be
fought for and defended constantly by each generation.... " These words by
President Ronald Reagan embody the spirit and conviction of the brave men
and women who served and continue to serve our nation in the armed
forces.
Standing under freedom's banner, Americans have always answered the
clarion call to duty to defend our great nation. Pinnacles of courage and
conviction, they have served our nation with distinction. This valiant
struggle for freedom endures today, as heroic men and women, both within
our borders and in the most dangerous of foreign lands, continue to
sacrifice so that we may live in freedom.
Just one year after the September 11 tragedy, we realize, now more than
ever, that a great nation does not happen by accident, but rather through the
patriotism, diligence, and undying hope of its people. All who call this land
home will forevermore owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to veterans for
helping to ensure that America remains a beacon of freedom and
opportunity to all nations. On this occasion, we honor their memories, their
service, their sacrifice.
Sincerely,
