Dads may dig Dixieland
By DEBBIE GRAVES
Staff Writer
I f you're looking for
a jazzy Fathees. Day
activity, try Oaks Park
at 7p.m. Sunday. .
That will be the site of a
free Dixieland jazz band
concert.
Sponsored by the Arts
Council of Brazos Valley,
the City of College Station
and the Musician's
Performance Trust Fund,
Dixieland Three will fill
the park with sounds of
New Orleans Jazz for two
hours.
Decked out in straw
hats, bow ties and arm
garters,Mike Barker,Pete
Buskirk and Bill Page will
play all the old favorites
and a few new ones.
This is the second
outdoor summer concert
of the season. Four more
concerts are planned.
A concert by the
Picardy Players, a
woodwind quartet,
opened the second season
June 7.
Sunday's concert won't
be the first appearance of
these three musicians in
the summer concert
series. Last year, they
and another friend en-
tertained audiences as the
Mountain Vagabonds,
playing European folk
music. Now they are
branching out with this
jazz band.
The idea for these
outdoor summer concerts
began about two years
ago. Jody Bates, director
of the Arts Council, heard
that the Musicians'
Performance Trust Fund
would provide half of the
funds for free outdoor
concerts if the remaining
funds could be raised by
local groups.
She went to the College
Station City Council and
told them about the grant.
They agreed to fund about
one -third of the costs and
the Arts Council picked up
the remaining expenses.
Last year, there were
five outdoor concerts. The
music included the
Mountain Vagabond's
European folk songs, the
Houston Pops, a jazz
quartet, a country and
western band and a
Fourth of July celebration
featuring the Community
Singers and a group
called Rainbow.
"The people really
seemed to enjoy them,"
Bates said. The concerts
"are a delightful thing."
"We got a lot of good
feedback," she said so she
went back to the city
council in October and
received funding for this
summer. The Arts
Council and the
Musicians' Performance
Fund continued to be
sponsors as well.
All this season's con-
certs, except the Fourth
of July concert, will be
held at 7 p.m. in Oaks
Park at the corner of
Stallings and Highway 30.
The July 4 concert will be
from 4 to 6 p.m. in Bee
Creek Park.
The Fourth of July
concert is the next one
scheduled after the
father's day concert. The
Community Singers and
Carter Creek Bluegrass
will perform.
