Foster College Station, Texas 77840 Dear Andy: So two old— timers, you and Donahue, got together and didn't have anything more important to talk about than Guin and Interstate. Yes, I know Donahue was at A & M and then went to New Hampshire, then overseas -- quite a gadabout. You mentioned companies wanting to buy. During those years when conglomerates were in style, we got continuous inquiries about selling. I suppose they intended to pay us in their own stock. I always thought I'd rather own our own stock than theirs. Now to answer your main question. On the Guide, all of the royalty goes to you. On the text, bWIo to you and 4 0% to your co— author. We double — checked it today and every— thing seems in order. So you're going to Israel. My next door neighbor's son is in Israel for a year. I'm going to give you his address and in the event you should be near where he is, give him a ring. It would thrill him to death. His father is a doctor. He doesn't write to his folks very often but instead calls them by telephone, at about $60.00 per call. Not very practical, is he? I have been in Florida for three weeks and plan to go to California for a neeting in April, which can count as another week's vacation. The State Supervisors and Teacher Trainers in Ag Ed meet in Fresno the latter part of April. Here's hoping you have a big time in Israel. Tell me about it when you come back. Don't let any of those Mid — Easterners shoot at you. Yo rs vey truly, Russell L. Guin f RLGIfs rorest & Forestry - by Anderson and Smith covers the subject of forestry as it applies in the south rather thoroughly. It would be useful in north- eastern U. S. only for its general information. It is slanted toward the southern pine type with almost no mention of the oak- hickory or northern hardwood types of timber. ___ The Forestry Curriculum Guide could be useful in Pennsylvania if it were altered to include more visuals pertaining to hardwoods and some Of the examples and problems changed from pines to hardwoods. The film and slide references should include dates of production. Some are rather outdated for current usefulness. Anderson, M.S. and William A. Smith, M.S. published by the Interstate Printers and Publishers, Inc., Danville, Illinois. This book has recently been revised and is now copyrighted in 1976. It has 432 pages with a list price of $7.95. There is a forestry curriculum guide that can be purchased with it with 57 pages and the list price $1.95. These publications are not generally written for Ohio Forestry, however, they do cover the basics of forestry as well as other general publications written for the United States. You should, if you have a forestry curriculum guide, up -date the date of copyright and the price of publicati JOURNAL OF FORE STRY /May 1977 Forests and Forestry, Second Edition David A. Anderson and William ,4. Smith. 432 p., illrrs. Interstate Printers & Publishers, Inc., Danville, Ill. 1976. $10.75. In this revised and expanded edition of their original 1970 volume, the au- thors have again provided a fine, easy - to -read book especially suitable for forest landowners and the general pub- lic. In my opinion, the book is too simplified for use in professional for- estry curricula. but it would be an ex- cellent basic text in a course designed for non- majors —farm forestry, for example. From a good, non - technical defini- tion of forestry to dendrology; from forest ecology to silviculture; forest re- sources management to economics; timber harvesting to wood identifica- tion; use, and preservation, artificial re- forestation to protection and use —this book covers them all in simplifreS,gen- eral discussion. The suggested ac- tivities and bibliography at the end of each chapter permit the reader to delve to greater depth. It is unfortunate that forest survey and economic data are usually several years old when a book is released; nonetheless, the 1976 edition does con- tain reasonably current (1973) informa- tion in tables which can be updated as needed by the user. A. new chapter on forests, and ecology, the addition of brief discussions of forest practice laws and urban forestry, and additional in- formation in the appendix are among the major changes. Instructors and students should find the review questions at the end of each chapter to be quite helpful. I would have preferred a somewhat different sequence in chapters. For example, Chapter VIII on economics could well be studied after the chapter on mea- surements, Chapter IV (which, by the way, is incorrectly numbered II in the table of contents of my review copy — one of the relatively few errors noted). And the last two chapters, XIII: Fire in the Forests, and XIV: Protecting Forests from Other Destructive Agents cc uld have come before the three on wood characteristics, harvest= ing, and wood preservation: : also noted an absence of photographs to illustrate present -day skidders and other kinds of harvesting equipment. However, these are not serious de -. ficiencies. Although emphasis is on the South, I agree with the authors' statement that the text contains information about all forest regions of the nation and is applicable throughout the conti- nental United States. Certainly, if no other work of this kind is available spe- cifically for ether regions, this one should be considered. On balance, I would say it is well worth the purchase price for a lay person or non - forestry student who wants to learn about for- estry from one book. NoPNIN E. Anderson 1202 E. Foster College Station, Texas 77840 Dear Andy: Just got your longhand note this morning and I'm sorry to learn about your wife's health, which precluded your going to the CEA meeting. It was a little too far away for me, too. I'm going to be in Dallas for the AVA and already have my room at The Baker Hotel. How about making it a point to come up to Dallas, December 1 -5 (that is, I plan to arrive on December 1 and leave on December 5). Glad to have your report on the trip to Greece and Egypt. I've never been in Egypt but did spend a few days in Greece a few years ago. Since I, at one time (years ago), taught Ancient History, which of course emphasized Greece, I doubly enjoyed my trip to Athens and northern Greece. Didn't get over to any of the islands though. The trouble with all of my trips is that I've made them in a hurry, half business and half pleasure. The Forestry book is doing all right; just a few figures — we are starting another reprint of 3000 copies. Having started the year with a little over 3000 copies we are down to about 400. We shipped 490 co ies_ the first three weeks of Augus and 315 conies in July and 21 copies last week. As I recall, some real smart fellow put in a big order on this book but I can't recall who it was. I'm just leaving for the University of Illinois, which of course is only a forty —five minute drive. Want to have a couple of people evaluate some manu— scripts I have -- one of them in horseback riding. What do you think of that? You wouldn't believe it but "Horses and Horsemanship" is one of our biggest sellers. It's always good to hear from you. You s tru , Russell L. Anderson 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas 77840 Dear Dr. Anderson: Thanks for your note of January 19. I Maybe I wrote to the wrong department. full exposure to a retiree's anger. am enclosing A & M's reply. If not, then they deserve In a book "Wood as Building and Hobby Material" to be published by Wiley & Sons, I should like to include the enclosed figure from your "Forests and Forestry" text, p. 38. For this I would need a glossy print of the original drawing, or the film negative for a period of three weeks. Of course, I would then also ask the publisher for permission. Actually I should like to include the figure also in a "Properties of Wood" chapter of "Introductory Forestry" edited by my colleague R. A. Young. "Introductory Forestry" will definitely compete with your book, but inclusion of your figure, with proper credit to you in the caption, would only speak for "Forests and Forestry ". Of course I would be glad to forward your expenses for the photo (or for the two photos). My alternative is to have the original Forest Service figure redrawn, but I would prefer to take yours and give you credit. In case you have a shortage of snow down there in Texas, we can help you out.
