Anderson 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas 77840 Dear Andy: Glad to have your longhand note of December 22. Yes, it is much more interesting to get notes like you got from the Extension Forester in North Dakota than the kind that "takes your book apart." You'll be interested to know that we sold over 200 copies of the Forestry book last week. I don't recall what your royalty check was but I think the book has done quite well this year and should do better next year. This isn't the best sales time of year and yet when I check back for the last five weeks sales ran 65, 55, 50, 30, and 44. Thank you for writing me. Gui n The Interstate Printers and Publishers Danville, Illinois 61832 Dear Russell: Can you send me about three gratis copies of Forests and Forestry for use in my "sales campaign "? I am down to my last copy. Incidentally, how are sales coming along on this book? What has been the situation in :Alabama where, according to an earlier note from ,You, it was adopted? And, how are you coming alon As I recall, you planned to make a trip to South America when last I heard from you. Will you be going to the C.E.A. meeting at "urray, Kentucky in August? If so, I will look fo n to seeing you. I send my best wishes. With kindest personal regards, Sincerely yours, D. A. Anderson THE Mr. D. A. Anderson 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas 77840 Dear friend Andy: June 28, 1973 I wanted to address you as "Mayor Anderson" but as I recall it you're not mayor anymore. Yes, it is my intention now to be at the Murray C.E.A. meeting. Haven't made any kind of reservation - where are you going to stay? Maybe I can sleep under your bed or at least get a room at the same place. I'll see that you get five copies of "Forests and Forestry" (no charge) to serve as sales- man's samples. You asked how sales were coming along. The best way for me to get an over- all picture of what has been sold and paid for since last October 31st is to look at the accwnulated royalty. That figure is eight hundred plus dollars. Now there are some books out in depositories and in open accounts which have not yet been paid for. It was a coincidence that I was just looking at the orders that had come in in the after- noon mail when I noted your letter and read it. Waynesboro, Pennsylvania ordered 25 Forestry books and Prescott, Arizona 22 in this afternoon's mail. I suppose there were some single copies mixed in with the others. My general impression was that there had been no exciting activity on this particular book during the last few months but that is normal. The big ordering period is just ahead of us and in fact I can see it starting this week. Schools and colleges are ordering for fall. We ran 3000 more "Forests and Forestry" not long ago, so we're ready for them. If the last time I wrote you was at the time I was talking of going to South America, I haven't written you very recently. That was a year or two ago when we were planning on going to South America.. It turned out that we got only as far as Venezuela, which was hardly in South America. This year we went over to Jamaica for a few days, while I was in Florida. I say we, that was my grandson and I. Each time my friend Dean Stoops from Lehigh University, who has an assignment in Puerto Rico, joined us. Nothing very big came from that Alabama adoption. The record shows that if they pay for what books have been shipped to Alabama, it will produce another three hundred dollars royalty. You know, of course, that the Forestry book is on several other state lists. Arkansas just adopted a list of our books and if they order the Forestry book in the quan- tities they have started to order the others, it will do well there. I'm looking forward to visiting with you at Murray, there? RLG/f s PRINTERS AND PUBLISHERS, INC. DANVILLE. ILLINOIS 61832 TELEPHONE AREA 217 446 -0500 When do you plan to arrive Yours very sell L. My friend, Loreen, out at Washington State University, did a lot of curriculum material. He was the Teacher Trainer in Ag Ed and did a lot of this work right at the end of his career and sent me copies. You might pick up an idea. At least you can have the satisfaction of noting that he used your book as a ref— erence. Do whatever you want with the book. This is the dull season in the high school book business but I did notice that we sold 25 Forestry books last week and 85 during March. Anderson 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas 77840 Dear Andy: What a pleasant surprise, having a note from you today. Yes, I went down to the Syracuse CEA meeting and arrived at Marshall Hall, which was the meeting place, only to find the door locked. No one knew where the CEA folks were but the book exhibits were in Marshall Hall. I'm getting too old to endure the frustration of such arrangements. I found the CEA crowd eventually and attended a joint session which they held with the Conservation Distract Organization, but I did not stay for the entire affair. Saw quite a few old friends and looked around for you, but of course no "Andy." There is a bare possibility that I will be in San Antonio about January 6 although I am not sure. M. E. Ensminger, one of our prolific authors, holds an annual Livestock School in San Antonio. He has about 300 enrollees, at $300 or $400 each, and imports faculty from South Africa, England, etc. I attended one in Phoenix a couple of years ago, and had to admit that he puts on quite a show. Your :Letter arrived in the afternoon mail, along with school orders, the first one of which was from Sutter Creek, California, ordering 35 "Forests and Forestry" -- a real smart fellow! Sales on the book have been real good -- 165 copies last week, 381 copies during August, and a rough check indicates that we have sent out about 3000 copies so far in 1974• Now if they all pay up on time, you ought to have a royalty check to pay for your Christmas presents. I just checked a little further and find that during the last twelve months, that is from September, 1973 to September, 1974, we sent out about 4700 copies. How does that suit you? It is always a pleasure to hear from you. Anderson 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas 77540 Dear Andy: Here are the answers to your questions in your letter of September 23, 1974: (1) I just noted that we sold 460 copies of the book in September, leaving 1118 books in stock. These will sell out about the 1st of February. That doesn't give you much time to do your work, does it? On the other hand, if we make another print— ing of this edition, the opportunity to revise is pushed forward almost too far. Could you do your work in the next three months? That would mean that we would be out of stock for whatever time it took us to push the book through. That might not be too bad though — sell out the old book, have a short out of stock period, and then start bragging about the 1975 edition. (2) In view of the three months' time you will have, you may have to limit your re— vision to the amount of time you ha ve. I think we should nationalize it with pie ures and whatever of er changes you think it ne (and you ha ve time to do). (3) Yes, by all means we hang onto our Vocational Agriculture connection. I'm sure some Area Vocational Schools bought the book too. You won't detract any from Vo —Ag interest by preaching a bit to the landowner, as you suggest. (4) Don't de— emphasize the South but don't leave the idea teat the book is Southern Forestry, because we want to sell it from Washington State to Maine and wherever they have need for a forestry book. Andy, now you can start sitting up nights studying and writing, like you used to expect those students to do. Frost is threatening here for the first time this evening. Y rs very t ly, Russell L.
