Dear Sir:
Your book FORESTS AND FORESTRY, on page 268 lists the
accredited forestry sc oo s. Included in that list is "The
Department of Forest Science at Texas A & M University."
This is a mistake.
We are quite concerned about this mistake. The forestry
program at Texas A & M University is not accredited by the
Society of American Foresters. The Society of American Foresters
is the Accrediting Agency for forestry schools.
This error does serious injury to all of the alumni of
the School of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Accreditation by the Society of American Foresters is not
readily attainable and has a certain value to both students,
faculty, alumni, and the University itself. The administration
and alumni of Stephen F. Austin State University labored long and
hard in order to get the school accredited. We certainly do not
feel that this honor and distinction should now be shared with
a University which does not at this time have the right to be
considered as accredited.
-1e believe that because the book was written by two employees
of Texas A & ICI University System, and because the book is
specifically designed for high school level instruction, it will
quite likely be used by all vocational education programs in this
state. de feel that it is very reasonable to expect that students
who decide to continue their higher education in forestry will

, Je believe that both of the following two proposed
solutions would be adequate to safeguard our rights as alumni
of the accredited institution. The first would be to have the
appropriate page reprinted and then bound in all unbound
volumes. The second would be for all unreleased bound copies
to have a corrected statement glued or stamped on the page
indicating the error.

We have looked over your book and feel that it will do

Dear Mr. Anderson:
RECEIVED

TEXAS t ORES T SERVICE
I enclose a letter which is quite disturbing since the writers obviously feel
they have a basis for legal action. Even though Paragraph 9 of our author's
contract would clear the Interstate of blame, it would be better for all of
us if the issue can be resolved amicably. Please write these people, telling
them that your publishers have referred their letter to you for reply, and
give them the facts which you find. Please send us a copy of your letter.
The most important question is whether or not the letter is correct in charging
that the book is in error. On page 268, there is a straight forward statement
that as of January 1969, the Society of American Foresters included the Depart-
ment of Forest Science of Texas A & 11 University on their list of accredited
schools. We can hope for nothing better than that you will be able to send
Mr. Earley (and his fellow signers) xerox copies of the January 1969 document
which so lists the Department of Forest Science of Texas A & M University. If
you do this, that should end the matter.
If the book is in error, and this department was not accredited by the Society
of American Foresters as of January 1969, then I think your only recourse is
to write them, admitting the error and promising to have it corrected the next
time the book is reprinted. As to their other demands, all you can say is that
you cannot make any promises, but that your publishers are reasonable people
and you will refer their letter back to us for consideration of practical
corrective steps.

Dear Billy,
This past week I was the recipient of a copy of the letter as add-
ressed to the president of Interstate Printers and Publishers by Phillip
Pate, Darwin Foster and you.
The copy was sent to me by Mr. Paul A. Sims, Editorial and
Marketing Manager of Interstate.
To say the least, I am "shocked" by the subject content, and
particular to the inferences therein.
Over the years I have personally been closer to Larry Walker and
the S.F. A. forestry school than I have been to the forestry school at
Texas A & M. I felt sure you were aware of such,I know Larry is. He
will substantiate this. And, I felt this association was growing deeper,
only now to have it shaken by the implications.
As Larry knows, I spent a considerable amount of time this past
year cooperating on the sociological study in northeast Texas in which
the sociological group of S. F. A. and the forestry department were in-
volved. Only recently I visited Sy Somberg at your point to help with
work of a graduate student. And, beyond this, following my conversa-
tion with Sy, were some plans to help seek research funds for your
school. There are other instances.
Do these activities not indicate that I have a heart for S. F. A. ?
No one can point out similar relationship to the forestry school at this
point, even though I am officially employed with the Texas Forest Service,
a part of Texas A & M University System. The fact that I am so employed
does not effect my personal views to S.F. A. as demonstrated by past
actions. This is why I am "shocked ", so to speak.
I am also confident that you will find a similar feeling on the part
of Bill Smith. Larry is aware of such also.
As you know, the book Forests and Forestry was written by Bill
Smith and me as individuals, not as members of the Texas A & M family.
I zm hopeful, Billy that the situation can be amicably settled and

Dear Andy:
Please refer to a paragraph in your letter to
Billy Earley, a copy to me. I have discussed the
situation pertaining to the "inadvertent omission"
of reference to Texas A&M forestry program in
the SAF brochure. At the time the booklet was de-
veloped and published, the Range and Forestry De-
partment at A &M had been dispanded and replaced,
in part, by a Range Science Department. At that
time, there was no official or legitimate Forest
Science Department. Consequently, it was not an
"inadvertent" error of omission, but intentional.
Someone from A&M (TFS) was on the committee that
developed the booklet. Consequently, the Chairman
of the Texas Chapter had no authority to state with
a paste -over that there was an inadvertent error.
It would have been proper for him to note on a paste -
over that A&M has a 4 -year- program when, and after,
the Coordinating Board acted favorably on that
matter.

Dear Larry,
Reference is made to you letter of February 10, being a response
to a statement I made on the SAF career publication in my letter to Billy
Earley of February 2, copy of which I sent you.
C.m receipt of your communication I checked further into the matter
of the SAF brochure and on the basis of such feel professionally obligated to
clarify some points in your letter, to wit:
1. No T. F. S. member was on the Career Brochure Committee as
stated by yuu, nor was anyone from Texas A & INI University, including the
System as a whole, thereon. Rather, the committee was made up of Ellis
Hunt, Tony Migilicco, and Ed Wagoner. There is no evidence that Tony
had any imput into the brochure.
2. Bill Smith and I still prefer to consider the deletion of the A & M
forestry program in the brochure as "inadvertent ". If we do not, it cpuld be
construed to mean that someone intentionally deleted A & M and therefore
attempted to discredit them. In addition, to consider it inadvertent, makes
it easier to accept the work performed by many people, including the SFA
staff, to rectify the error. Some of us spent considerable time inserting
correctional statements in the brochure.
3. When the Range and Forestry Department at A & M was changed
to the Range Science Department, this was merely a title change. It did not
mean that the A & M forestry program was disbanded. The two -year program
continued with the addition of the PhD program under the Range Science De-
partment. As you know, the provision allowing for reimbursement of former
A & N1 students, for the difference between in -state and out -of -state tuition
while attending out -of -state forestry schools was discontinued.
4. A statement which mentioned the A & M two -year forestry pro-
gram was in the original draft copy prepared. Someone, acting on the assump-
tion A & M no longer had a program deleted it.

I have located a copy of the career publication with the paste -over.

Dear Andy:
I realize that the mistake in the book has been a problem
for you. However, I have talked with some of the other
members of the S.F.A. Forestry Alumni Association. First, we
wanted to be certain that we did not mean to, and especially
I as the writer of the letter did not mean to imply anything
other than what was stated exactly in the letter. I realize
that Stephen F. Austin and A & PSI have been working together
for sometime and I am particularly happy that this is so. I
hope that the growth and cooperation for both will continue
in order to help the State of` Texas become the leader in the
Forestry field. Even so, it was the feeling of the Alumni
Association that we still needed to attempt to protect our
school.
As one way of solving the problem, I would like to suggest
that a sheet be inserted in each book which would read as follows:
"Due to an inadvertent error on page 268, it should
be noted that the only professionally accredited
Forestry School in Texas is Stephen F. Austin
University School of Forestry, Nacogdoches, Texas,
75961.'
If we had the assurance of the publisher that such a
notice would be placed in each of the books not yet released
for distribution, our Alumni Association would provide for
such settlement.
Further, I suggest that the people in Texas who have
received copies of the book be also notified of the correction.
If this seems like a reasonable solution to you, as it does
to us, will you please let me know and we will be happy to
implement it.

Dear Mr. Earley,
I am writing you on behalf of my clients D. A. "Andy"
Anderson and W. A. "Bill" Smith with regard to the text "Forests
and Forestry" which they authored.
I have reviewed the correspondence on this matter as made
available to me by Mr. Anderson, commencing with the letter of
January 18, 1972 to the president of Interstate Printers and Pub-
lishers, to which you were a signatory, to your letter of March
6, 1972 to Anderson.
It is evident to me that the authors of the text, namely D.
A. Anderson and W. A. Smith, admitted to an honest mistake in
citing Texas A & M as having an accredited forestry school, while
or other ace-2d fed 3euj6n forestry .
not excluding S. F. A. University. It was inadvertent. Such is also
A
acknowledged in your letter of March 60
In view of the financial hardship that would be placed on my
clients in a book revision at this time, I have advised them to take
action as follows with respect to this matter:
1. Communicate with the printer informing them that
in a reprinting of the text, "Forests and Forestry ", the current
mistake with respect to the accreditation status of the forestry school
at Texas A & M be rectified.
2. That a joint letter, signed by my clients be sent to
all Vocational Agriculture Area Supervisors in Texas pointing out
the inaccuracy in the text, such to include the quotation in your
March 6, 1972 letter to D. A. Anderson.
3. That copies of such correspondence be provided you.
I have also advised my clients to take appropriate action on
these matters &t the earliest possible date as a means of clarifying
this problem.

Dear Mr. Sims:
We have about reached the point of "no return" in our dialogue
with the people in the School of Forestry of Stephen F. Austin Uni-
versity.
Earlier I sent you all related 6'rre=pondence which transpired
since your January 20 letter to me and which culminated in Farley's
letter to me of March 6. A copy of the latter letter was sent to
Interstate by Earley. I also sent you a copy.
As I believe I mentioned to you, there are some "feelings"
between Stephen F. Austin and Texas A & M University and its a
matter of W. A. Smith and I being caught in the middle.
To begin with, I do feel that it was unprofessional for them to
write originally as they did, without making Smith and I, as authors,
aware of such.
We do wish to reiterate that the inclusion of Texas A & M as
an accredited undergraduate school was inadvertent on our part.
We did not exclude S. F. A. either, nor did we include the approved
doctoral program in forestry at Texas A & M. It was an oversight
in the final proofing.
Actually, a-; you will note in Earley's letter, they finally ad-
mit that it was "inadvertent ".
In Earley's letter he made two proposals to correct the situa-
tion, to wit:
1 Put an insertion in each book not yet released for dis-
tribution from your point (they have a specific worded statement)
Z. Notify those in Texas who have received copies of the
correction.
4NTe are in a quandry as to just what can or should be done, and
before I reply to Earley, I welcome your comments.
-2-
s
As to the statement they propose, in quotes, this would merely
serve to glorify the situation on their behalf. It appears to us that a
statement, such as the following, should serve the same purpose.
"Due to an inadvertent error on page 268,the Texas A & M
University undergraduate forestry program was listed as accredited
by the Society of American Foresters. Ahile they do have course
work leading Sea B.S. degree in forestry, they are unaccredited at
this time. "
If it is your judgement, we could write a letter from this point
to those who have received a copy in Texas. However, we would
need a listing of the recipients from you.
I await word from you on this matter as a whole.
With kindest regards,
Yours very truly,
D. A. Anderson,

Mr. David A. Anderson
Head, Information & Education Department
Texas A & M University
1202 Foster Avenue
College Station, Texas 77843
Dear Mr. Anderson:
I have just returned from vacation, to find your letter of March 17 waiting for
me.
We are agreeable to any reasonable resolution of the problem, and will do what-
ever you and Y1r. Smith wish us to do that is practical.
1. We can print an errata sheet and bring all unshipped books from the warehouse
back to the bindery and have the errata sheet dropped inside the front cover.
This will cost you and Mr. Smith a great deal less than would be the cost of
gluing such labels into the book.
2. All of the books distributed in Texas have, of course, been distributed to
the vo -ag teachers in the state. It would be almost impossible to recapture the
name of each individual teacher who has ordered the book. The simplest way to
inform them of the error would be to write a letter to all the 1380 vo -ag teachers
in the state. Should you not have the facilities for doing so yourselves, if you
will supply us with your letterhead and envelopes, we would be willing to mimeograph
such a notice, run the envelopes on our vo -ag plates, and mail them, billing you on an
actual cost basis for doing this.
If these proposals would satisfy all parties, let me know. In this case, please
supply exact wording for the errata sheet. If you wish us to distribute the state-
ment to Texas vo -ag teachers, send the proposed letter together with letterhead paper
and envelopes.

students for transfer to a professional
forestry school at the sophomore or
junior level. Often these do not include
forestry courses, but lay a foundation
for professional forestry education. Inter-
ested persons should contact a profession-
al forestry school for advice prior to en-
rolling for preforestry studies.

Dear Mr. Sims:
Reference is made to your letter of April 4.
I welcome hearing from you relative to the following points. As
you stated, we desire, as well, a practical approach to this matter.
1. Assuming we supply letter with stamped sealed envelope, or
perhaps a printed postal card, what labor cost would be involved in
running off the letters or cards on your Texas Vo -Ag plates and
placing them in the mail for us? We merely want an estimate of cost
on this.
2. With respect to the errata sheet, what is the estimate of cost
of having the errata sheet dropped inside the unshipped books now in
the warehouse? Again, merely an estimate is desired.
3. Could not the errata sheets be placed in the books as sold?
4. Would there be any objection to us having the errata sheet
printed at this point and sending the supply to you? What quantity
would be needed?
We are still involved in discussion with the concerned party and
need the above information to do the necesaary evaluation we are
making.
An early response from you will be appreciated.
Yours very truly,
D. A. Anderson

Mr. David A. Anderson

Dear Mfr. Anderson:
It appears that we are beginning to close in on the FORESTS AND FORESTRY matter.
Let me simply answer the questions in your April 11 letter in order: yo
1. If you mean you would send us the envelopes already stuffed and sealed, we
would be glad to address them on our Texas vo —ag plates at no charge, billing
you only for actual postage. I suggest that you send 1100 envelopes, thus
allowing 20 for spoilage. Fifty spares might be a better idea.
2. At a rough guess, 9100.00 should cover the cost of doing this, although quite
a bit of work is entailed. The books are at present boxed, sealed, and in
storage. The boxes would have to be brought over, opened and unpacked. Each
of the 3,000 books must then be manually opened, the errata sheet inserted,
the books repacked, the cartons resealed, and taken back to storage.
3. No, this is not practical, for a number of reasons.
4. We would have no objection at all. 3,000 copies would be needed -- and
again, some spares for spoilage should be provided.
I trust this gives you the information you need to complete your plans and
arrangements.

Dear Mr. Sims:
Reference is made to my letter of June 1 transmitting the errata
sheet.
Reference is also made to your invoice M -7103 of July 1, 1972
in amount of $95. 39 for placing errata sheets inside the forestery
book Forests and Forestry (Inv. #1165).
Earlier I had asked that such charges, if possible, be deduced
from the royalty sum due me and Smith (charge on half cost to each
of us) in December.
Im not sure from your present invoice if payment is due now
in order to accomplish the insertion of the errata sheets since the
wording tends to implk that such has not been accomplished.
Please advise with respect to this matter.

Dear i.s. SrAth:
Fortunately for man, timber is a renewable resource. The day is gone tnihen huge
tracts of virgin timber can to cut and left as a new area of deserted wasteland
while the harvesters move on to other virgin tracts. How intelligent forestry
practices asst replace the earlier prodigal waste of our nation's timber re-
sources. One of the most important of all the groups which must become alert
to the needs and practices of modern forestry are the oumers of small forest
acreages -- small :individu. but totalling in the aggregate many millions of
acres of timber land*
11 book which has been written specifically to meet the needs of this group, and
of students who will become members of the group after their schooling is past,
is FORSSTIS ATTD FORE M. Y, by David A. Anderson and Uilliam A. Sndth.

Gentlemen:
The Seventh World Forestry Congress will be held in Buenos Aires,
Argentina October 4 -18, 1972. `Some 3,000 representatives from
more than 0- Nations are expected'to participate.
The Organizing Committee for the Congress is planning to hold an '•
exhibition of publications of interest to the forestry profession.
Under one category of this exhibition, publishers of forestry and
related information can contribute single copies of their books
to the Committee. These would be placed on exhibit for examination
and ordering by participants at the Congress. At the end of the
Congress the books would become property of the Argentine Government
for use in its libraries.
Our Committee has reviewed a number of more recently published
forestry publications and yours *(see below) are among those that
we recommend for display at the Congress. If you are interested
in exhibiting we suggest that you mail single copies to this

Dear Russell:
Your august 30 letter is acknowledged. Flow nice it was to hear
from you and to be advised that the book For ests and Fore will
be represented at the Worlds Forestry Congress n Argentina.
I missed you at the CEA meeting in Lincoln, Nebraska. I had
expected you to be present. Overall, I will say the accommodations
were much better than we had in t1 chigan where we "roughed it."
Text year the meeting will be in Kentucky.
Thanks, Russell, for the Xeroxes appended to your letter and for
the statistics on the book sale. Like: do, I do hope it holds up in
sales.
I seriously doubt that I will attend the meting in Argentina.
I may likely attend the SAF meeting in Arkansas.
Are you Argentine bound? It would be a lovely trip, no doubt.
It „i11 likely be well attended.
With kindest personal regards,
Sincerely,

Dear Andy:
This is Saturday morning, which always lets me do some things that I keep
laying back all week. Just noted that I haven't written you since re—
ceiving your letter back in September.
The Forestry book has jogged right along in sales. As you know, the roy—
alty year closed October 31st and royalty will be computed on all books
paid for to that date. You should be getting a nice little Christmas check.
•.,, Glad to hear that the CEA in Lincoln, had more comfortable accommodations
than we had in Michigan. I'm not prepared to live dormitory style anymore.
Hope everything is going well with you. It is a pleasure to hear from you.
Yours truly,
