VOLUME I City of College Station Parks and Recreation Department May 1, 2011 Dear Friends of History, Whether you have been to Veterans Park and Athletic Complex for a sports event,
a veteran’s event, a walk or a run, you will not want to pass up this opportunity. Hear about it from the folks who have played a significant part in helping us to honor our nation’s
history and our men and women who have served and are serving now. There are new and exciting things in the future of this one-of-a-kind park. LT GEN House is just the one to present
this to us. Meet us at the American Pavilion! “Veterans Park & Lynn Stuart Pathway – A Guided Tour” LT GEN Randolph W. House USA (Ret.) Wednesday, May 18, 2011; 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

OUT AND ABOUT One of our favorite things to do is get out of the office, away from the scanners and the computers to visit with folks in the community about our unique and fascinating
history. This week took us to Mrs. Gardner’s third grade class at Rock Prairie Elementary School. Historic Preservation Committee member Libby Vastano and I had a great time with the
students. They were most attentive and lots of fun! I shared a photo of my third grade teacher Mrs. Landiss and me. NEW in PROJECT HOLD NEW Home Page for Project HOLD! Thank you, Mike

Toliver Williams 1936 – 2011 I met Eleanor when we were working on an historic marker for the soon-to-be 100 year old Roans Chapel Baptist Church. Due to her efforts, the church was
the first African American church to receive an historic marker from the City of College Station. Eleanor was all about firsts. By 1971, she gained recognition as the first female African
American air traffic controller specialist for the FAA. Just this year she was inducted into the Black Aviation hall of Fame. Eleanor grew up in Breezy Heights in College Station. How
appropriate that the services were held at the Lincoln Center on Eleanor Street. I am honored to have known her.
