The Information and Referral Office of the Brazos County
Community Council is pleased to present this Directory of Social
services to the people of Brazos County. It contains descriptions
of services offered by the various social agencies, r.rovided in
most cases by the agencies themselves.
This directory is the latest in the continuing series pre-
pared and distributed by the Brazos County Community Council and
is made available to the social agencies listed as well as to any
other- having a real need for the information contained herein.

while a man is in service.
Dependent parents - as above.
Disabled veterans and dependents, dependents of deceased
servicemen or deceased veterans - as above.
Civilians can be helped in emergenev situations.

BRAZOS VALLEY DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

A Group Served: Loosl governments in the 7- county Brazos Valley
area and some individuals.
Services The basic function is one of planning programs in various
areas for the several governments in the area. Some of
the areas include: public works, industrial park planning,
land use, water and sewage, criminal justice planning,
health -care planning. They also have an alcohol and
drug -abuse program; implement an emergenev medical
system program; run a manpower program aimed at finding
employment for and training of disadvantaged persons;
offer loans to small businesses; are in charge of
the Area Office on Aging.

BRAZOS VALLEY MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL RETARDATION

Age Gro up - S erved : All ages of mentally retarded.
Services To coordinate all mental health and mental retardation
efforts in the 7- county area. Provide residential housing
arrangements for adult mentally retarded clients; provide
education rrorrams and health provision for mentally
retarded clients; provide individual and family counseling;
provide rrograms on drug abuse; provide day care for MR
clients. Some of the sponsored agencies are: Human
Development Center (see separate listing); Child Develop-
ment Center (see separate listing); Crossroads Out-
reach (see separate listing); Family Tree, a half -way
house for mentallv retarded males.

therapy; respiratory and occupational therapy; emergency

BRYAN NON- PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (FOOD STAMP PROGRAM)

Age Group Serv ed: All ages, in seven - county Brazos Valley area.
Services Individual and family counseling on an out - patient basis=
in- patient facilities; crisis and emergency services;
training of individuals in the field of mental health
(mainly Texas A do M students): educational and training
programs for the communities.

Fees According to ability to pair.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER (COMMUNITY MR CENTER) 9

Age Group Served Ages 3 to adult, maximum of 37.
Ser Classes for pre - school retarded children; classes for
school -age severely and profoundly retarded children;
class for Post- school -age retardates; program includes
self -help care; physical activities; special education
readiness where possible; phvsical, occupational and
speech therapy as indicated. Open 12 months.

Fees Parents are asked to donate up to 825 per month. No one
refused admittance for financial reasons.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Age Group Se rved: 3 -5, low- income.
Services Offer child day -care at the Child Development Center,
located at Christopher Village, and in Hearne, 9 months
a i,rear; offer home -based child - development stressing
care in the home, working with the parents.

placed on pregnant women, homemakers with
children, vouth.
Services To helr families in low- income areas in learning about
good nutrition, selecting and buying food, preparation
of food, use of food stamps, rraetices of storage and
sanitation, monev management; increasing awareness of
services available to the public and increasing par-
ticipation in USDA programs.

FAMILY PLANNING CENTER

Services Providing employment for retarded adults by subcon-

STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE

Services Provides protective services to dependent and neglected
children, including child abuse (Sheltering Arms, a home
for abused children, is supervised by them); recruits
and supervises foster homes; licenses day -care centers;
rrovides adoption services; casework supervision of un d
mothers; rrovides services to all recipients of public
assistance as requested by client.
Determines eligibility for public aasistance applicants
(Aid for Dependent Children, Old Age Assistance, Aid to
Blind, Aid to Totallir and Permanently Disabled). Over-
sees Medicaid program.
Some Medicaid benefits: 3 prescriptions monthly; nursing
home care; hoerital service; home -maker care; payment for
some aids, glasses, etc.; medical and dental screening for
AFDC children.

disability; assistive devices, such as artificial limbs,
etc.; training for a ,job; room, board, and transportation
during rehabilitation; tools and supplies to obtain
employment or for self - employment; job- placement..

persons; halfwav -house facilities for Mental Health-
Mental Retardation Center out - patients; furniture and
clothing store for low -cost items; operates recveling
center; sponsors Sheltering Arms, child -abuse facility.

Ser Provides Social Security account number cards; assists in
filing and developing clain4 for all types of benefits;
enrolls eligible persons in Medicare program and assists
them in obtaining the benefits therein; helps people
understand their rights and responsibilities under the
social security program; provides itinerant service to
principal towns in the 7- county Brazos Valley area;
takes applications for SSI from blind, disabled or needy
aged.
