TIMPSON ENGLISH TEACHER RECEIVED AWARD FOR SERVICE:
D.A. "Andy" Anderson of Texas A &M University presents certi-
ficate of recognition for outstanding service to the education of
Texas school students to Mrs. Laurene Billingsley, a teacher in
-the Timpson schools for the past 36 years, The award was made
.during the annual PTA Christmas program at the school. Staffoto

during the annual PTA Christmas program at the Timpson High
School Auditorium.

grams.
The certificates of awards

Anderson, head of the informa-
tion and education department
of Texas Forest Service at Tex-
as A & M University.
Mr. Anderson made the pres-
entations on behalf of the Com-
mittee for Conservation Educa-
tion.
The committee appointments
were made by J. W. Edgar,
Texas Education Agency head.
The annual awards are state
wide and only 28 are m ad e
each year. This year two of
the 28 were made to Timpson
school teachers, which is rec-
ognized as an unusual event.
Mrs. Billingsleys' award was
made because of her many stu-
dents who won first places in
the annual essay contest con-
ducted by the Soil Conservation
Service, and for her outstand-
ing work as a school teacher.
She has taught school in Tex-

English classes.
In making the award to Mrs.
Billingsley, Mr. Anderson said,

reer she has been loved and re-
spected by her students and fel-
low teachers as an outstanding
leader and teacher. She has
been a diligent member and
worker of the PTA in which she
held the positions of secretary
and president. She has partici-
pated in all worthwhile activi-
ties in the school, church and
community in which she lives.
Her 1968 class was honored at
Jacksonville, Texas for taking
three of the ten regional win-
ners. "
The presentations were made
jointly by the Soil Conservation
Service and the Texas Forest
Service.
Cecil Wharton, a native of
Joaquin and also a graduate of
Joaquin High School, has been
the vocational agriculture
teacher at Timpson for some
twenty years and prior to that
he taught in a number of other
schools. At one time he was
county agent of Rusk County,
and was also vocational ag
teacher at Dibol, Texas at one
time.
Mr. Wharton has won numer-
ous awards for his contributions
to the Soil Conservation pro-
grams, and was presented It is
award for these contributions.
