Ground - breaking cere-
monies were held here Tu-
esday'at the corner of FM
Road 2154 and Luther Str-
eet for a 200 unit housing
project designed for low
and moderate income fam-
ilies to be known as South
gate Village Apartments.
The complex will be owned
by Southgate Village Char-
itable Trust and is being
sponsored on a non - profit
basis by the Catholic Dio-
cese of Austin, Texas. Al-
though non - profit, the fac-
ility will be on the College
Station tax rolls at the same
tax rate as other local com=
parable properties.
In an interview, Rev. Ed-
ward F. Jordan, Trustee of
the Southgate Village'Char-
itable Trust, advised that
the facility will have a total
value of $2,804,700, will be
centrally heated and air -
conditioned, and will con-
sist of 1, 2, 3, & 4 bed-
room unfurnished apart-
ments, with a large day-
care and administration
building provided. He also
stated that the 1007 loan
by the Federal National
Mortgage Association is
fully insured by the Fed-
eral Housing Administra-
tion and will be amortized
over a forty year period.
In sponsoring this non-
profit housing, the Diocese
of Austin has. responded,
along with most of the other
major religious bodies nat-
ionally, to a plea by the
U.S. Congress to help fill
the growing housing short-
age in this rental price
range.. The Diocese feels
that housing is one of the
most crucial factors in the
overall pattern of life which
sets the character of °a
community. Also, the Dio-
cese believes that serving
the general welfare in this
way is as much a respon-
sibility of the Church as it
is of private industry and
the government.
