TexasA&M established by the Texas State Legislature. Later that year Harvey
Mitchell offered 2,416 acres of land for the college to be located in Brazos County.
The college was located four miles south of Bryanto avoid "shootings,
stabbings, lynchings, and gambling [which] were all too common. And
according to an 1870's report in the Brenham Banner "tramps"were common in
the neighborhood of Bryan. The new city was a rough place indeed and leading
citizens wanted to insulate the students from Bryan's "evil influencesY***
