HomeMy WebLinkAboutElizabeth Coulter Obituary Elizabeth Lane Coulter May 21, 1912 – February 1, 2011 Elizabeth Lane Coulter, 98, of College Station, Texas, passed away February 1, 2011. The daughter of William Allen Lane and Martha Conner, she was born May 21, 1912 in Vernon, Texas. Both of her grandfathers fought in the Civil War. Elizabeth received her teaching certificate from Hardin-Simmons College in Abilene, Texas in 1932 and began her teaching career in the Vernon, Texas schools. As part of her graduate study, Elizabeth traveled in Mexico in 1936 and 1938 to study traditional arts and crafts and native plants and completed her Masters degree in Art from North Texas State Teachers College in 1939. On April 15, 1938 Elizabeth married Frank Coulter, her husband and life partner for the next 63 years. In the late 1930s, they taught in Amarillo, worked in Santa Fe, NM for Ernest Thompson Seton, (a founder of the Boy Scouts of America) and lived briefly in Chicago and Boston while Frank was in the Navy. Following WWII, the couple moved to Bryan-College Station where they opened Coulter's Gift Shop and Interiors. From the early 1960s through the 1970s they worked summers for the Cherokee Historical Association in Cherokee, NC. From 1955 through 1970, Elizabeth taught in the A & M Consolidated Schools and in 1999 was recognized for her outstanding contributions as an elementary school teacher. The Coulters were active supporters of numerous cultural organizations in the Brazos valley. Elizabeth is remembered for her love of reading and learning, her enthusiasm and knowledge of gardening and native plants and her passion for international travel. Sons Lane Coulter and wife Jan Brooks of Santa Fe, NM, Allen Coulter and wife Kim Knowlton of New York City and granddaughter Amelia Coulter of Brooklyn, New York survive her. Her brother, William A. Lane IV and wife Mary Etta Lane of Baton Rouge, LA, sister-in-law Doris Coulter of Cherokee, NC and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Sylvia Green, Elizabeth's caregiver and friend since 2000. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Peckerwood Garden Foundation of Hempstead, TX founded by professor John Fairey of the College of Architecture at Texas A&M. http://peckerwoodgarden.org/or the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin.
